Wing mirror glass again

Featured Replies

Sorry to raise this subject again, but the glass fell out from my offside mirror yesterday, and looking at previous threads here has me confused.

The glass fell away from what looks like a rubbery backing sheet, which is still inside the mirror housing. It has 2 tiny white tacky spots on it, the rest is not sticky at all. The mirror back and the grey sheet have a diagonal area where there is an obvious start of green stuff growing on it. The line down the mirror is replicated on the sheet.

Previous posts have shown pictures of what looks like a 4-point metallic or plastic mounting device rather than the grey sheet that I see here.

Is it OK to just clean everything up and stick the mirror back on using either double sided sticky tape or spray-on contact adhesive, or is there something better? Has anyone used the sticky tape and, if so, how has it lasted?

My mirror was originally heated, but it hasn't worked for ages, so that doesn't matter.

This is what it looks like:

£10 off eBay for a new mirror with heated element, then you will have a decent heated mirror.

Thanks for that and replying so quickly.

I'll probably order one, but I really would prefer to do a quick job myself. (Have a long drive to a funeral in a tiny village tomorrow morning and expect to have to jiggle around in tight spots when I get there). The mirror glass itself is unbroken.

Do you know if they supply the mirror on the rubbery backing, and does this just clip onto the 4-point mounting? If I do a bodge today, will it be easy to unclip when the replacement arrives?

Yes the mirror will come with the plastic frame on the back. The one I got didn't come with the two metal clips but they were easy enough to take off the old one and fit to the new mirror.

A bit of double sided tape should be fine for now.

I stuck my glass back on with that 3m licence plate tape and it lasted some harsh weather for a few months until I could be bothered to find a replacement.

I stuck mine back on with 3m double sided tape from ebay. Worked perfectly. I stuck it directly onto the black rubber backing you describe. It meant my the heating element still worked too. Go for it. Saves buying a new one. :-)

I siliconed mine back on. That's 3 we've had go between the Octavia and Passat. All in the same way as well.

I'd get one from eBay (OVI Autos) for just over £10.

In the meantime, you can glue it back or use double sided tape as above.
