Bump Starting

Featured Replies

It's just been mentioned in another thread so , not wanting to derail it........

Can you bump start a DSG petrol or diesel by rolling in N then simply selecting D at the appropriate speed or does DSG not activate without the engine running first?

You need to put your foot on the brake to get it into drive from neutral.

With the ignition in the 'run' position and brake lights on, then.........?

Since gear selection and clutch actuation are controlled by hydraulic systems, I doubt that moving the stick will actually achieve anything since you'll have no hydraulic pressure.  Pretty sure you can't bump start a DSG.

Yeah, that's right.

Thinking about that, the pump requires the engine to be running and I guess it's just in neutral otherwise unless in P of course.

I know that in the manual it categorically states not to attempt to bump start or tow with the driven wheels on the ground.

There is a mechanical link to the gearbox for taking it out/putting it into park but that's it the rest is electronic and requires oil pressure to operate the hydraulic actuator in the gearbox.
