Advice on a Number one cylinder misfire - Plus cost of repair

Featured Replies

HI Everyone

Is there anyone out there who can advise of any garage in the greater Manchester area that doesn't rip you off ?

Our 2005 Petrol 1.2 Fabia has had a problem over the last two weeks where the engine management light comes on and the car sputters to a halt (Its a three cylinder engine).

The RAC diagnosed the fault P0301 (Cylinder number one misfire)

They replaced the coil with a new one and all was well for a few days.

Last weekend the same problem occurred, the RAC came out again and got the car going again saying the fault is not showing up as a faulty coil.

The car ran Ok for a few days until tonight, when the energy management light came on again and the car spluttered to a halt.

RAC came out again and the fault is showing as P0301 Cylinder number one misfire. They have swapped the new coil over from cylinder one to cylinder two, the car is running again and the RAC advise to get it to a garage to see if they can find out what the problem is.

They swapped the new coil from cylinder one to cylinder two so that if that car breaks down again, it should highlight if the new coil is faulty (which they doubt, but would replace under warranty) or narrow the problem down to the ECU or a faulty injector on number one cylinder.

Six million dollar question, since we have had the ECU changed about two years ago, at great cost, we don't want to be rippled off this time.

If its the ECU what's the going rate for replacement (last time we ended up paying £1200 but the garage said there was a problem with the cylinder head as well)

If its the injector on Cylinder one, what's the typical cost of repair

Does anyone know a decent (Honest) garage in Manchester where we can go with a bit of confidence that we'll get a 'straight' opinion.

Thanks

Tony

Sounds more like the coil wiring loom is faulty to be honest.

So have the spark plugs been out and looked at while this has been going on?

^ Very good question, and an embarrassment for the RAC if the answer is no.

Hi Lads

I put Three new plugs in after the first time it happened, it also had the new coil from the RAC on Cylinder one at that point.

Genuine coil latest spec?

Some patent ones can be junk

And its funny when a 3cyl is running on 2! My brothers did that but a new coil fixed it

Its a genuine VAG coil, I don't know about the spec.

Sounds more likely the wiring coil loom they can break down.
