Estate tailgate chips?

Featured Replies

Cleaning the car at the weekend, I noticed that both bottom corners of my tailgate have paint missing down to bare metal. There are marks on the bumper as though the tailgate has been rubbing on it.

I haven't been rear ended, and I haven't reversed into anything.

Anyone else seen this?

Thanks,

Martin

Any pictures? Perhaps the boot lid needs realigning...

I spotted this about a year after I had my towbar fitted - they'd not quite aligned the bumper correctly when refitting it. It's since been refitted and I need to tidy up the left-hand edge where there's a small rust spot.

Hi Don't need pictures - I believe this is a VAG/Skoda problem through & through.... seen Passats, Golfs & now also our superb with the same problem!

Told a former colleague, went to have a look at his Passat - on the right I bet its worse then on the left....don't know why just what I've noticed!

& yes lip of his tailgate was properly rusting away (it was over 2 yrs old).

Found out that there is the 6 month clause in warranty for realignment (all VAG's) but when I noticed it on my Superb, Lookers in Stockport agreed to lower the bumper slightly under warranty (although it was just under 12 months old).

I understand, this meant removing bumper adjusting mountings & re-affixing bumper.

2 years on it appears to have not got any worse.

Surprise surprise they did not accept there was any problems but as I complained due to previous experience they reluctantly agreed.  BUT they did not touch up boot lip/edge.

I guess your problem is quite localised in the corners - I bet its worse on the right (drivers) side.

I think dust/sand/grit collects there and as the panels move when hitting bumps and pot holes causes some friction between the bumper & boot lid.

Good luck & keep complaining!

Regards

Stephan

sorry should have also said...

1.  therefore I feel problem is solved

2.  None of the cars owned previously (including my Superb) where this problem has been identified had a tow bar fitted!  I firmly believe its unrelated to tow bars being fitted. It probably takes almost a year before its got to the point where its a problem.

Had it serviced a couple of weeks ago. They said that the tailgate is a known issue and will do it under warranty.

Also had the rear alloys replaced under warranty for corrosion. Currently arguing about the fronts.

Hi Excellent news... good to hear its been acknowledged as a known fault - hopefully VW are also acknowledging it :-)

Good luck with the alloys - hopefully that will be easier too as it is a common issue.

Ours have suffered corrosion too but kerbing won't help any claim - oops, but SWMBO to blame... honest gov!

Had the work done under warranty last week. Involved respraying the bottom half of the tailgate, so the car still smells of solvents! For some reason, they even left the printout of the service bulletin in the car!
