Run flat tyres

Featured Replies

You could spec a 3er without the runflats last i looked.

run flats

+ can be run at zero pressure for up to 50 miles at 50 mph

+ allow manufacturers to abandon spare wheel

+ give you nice warm fuzzy feeling that all will be well

- not immune to blow out/total failure

- hard(er) to repair, if at all, try asking a tyre fitter to repair...

- expensive

- heavy

- poor ride, handling and steering

- total pain in the arse if you actually need to replace one (ie you gunked it, its a weekend, you're in France)

I guess if BMW had mostly front wheel drive cars, then there would be no runflats

Because of the space used by the propshaft tunnel and rear diff, they've had to do this. Again, shame.

Yet many 4x4 cars (like the Octavia) can fit a full size spare and a rear diff. In the case of Haldex, the unit is also much bigger than a standard diff as it also contains the coupling and associated hydraulics.

All the older BMWs were rear wheel drive and they all had spare wheels.

When BMW fitted Run Flat Tyres to the BMW MINI & ruined the ride,

it had nothing to do with Rear Wheel drive.

Just a Corporate Decision for the Possible Market they were aiming for,

Females and Males in Suits.

(That is not Boiler Suits.)

hey, I run a MINI and drive it to work in a suit ... then again, the first thing I did was sell the ridiculously heavy wheels and awful run flat tyres. In fact the run flats are so universally hated that BMW made them optional on the MINI.

^^^ OH has a Mini and i am considering ditching the run flats as all 4 need replacing soon. But then again she hasn't complained about the ride and it does give us piece of mind that she wouldn't need to worry about changing in the event of a flat .

The whole RF/NRF thing has been pretty much stickied on all of the various MINI fora.

The newer RFs are better but they're still not immune from a bent rim, or some such challenge of modern pot holed roads.

I'm still bewildered that Rover/BMW went to such efforts to design and launch a new car and for BMW's "marketing men" to then hobble it with oversized rims that weigh 11.4kg each with massive heavy clumpy run flat tyres. It's like roller skating in wooden clogs.
