MDI and iphone 5c - HELP

Featured Replies

Hi,

Really hope someone can help? Just bought a new Yeti and specified the MDI option. My wife has a new iphone 5c and I have a inano player. I can connect my nano without problem. However, for the iphone 5c I had to order a lightening to micro USB connector from Apple - this shows as 'device not recognised' and therefore does not work. I thought it might be a dodgy adaptor but this is my 4th one now so I have discounted that possibility. I am reasonably confident that it is not the lead either as my nano works fine.(albeit a different lead). Skoda currently do not produce a MDI to lightning lead - I am aware VW do make one and I have considered purchasing one of those but I am not sold it is the adapter/lead and I reluctant to spend even more money..

The only other option is that the MDI interface is failing to recognise the iphone 5c? i.e. it needs a firmware update? But the car is BRAND new so I find that a strange possibility.

Anyway, any advice/dircetion would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,

Alex

I think your problem is using a USB lead, you either need a 30 pin Apple MDI lead and a lightning convertor, or a lightning MDI lead to get full functionality from the iphone5

Thanks for the answer, it is a possibility. It would be useful to find out whether anyone has had an iphone 5c > Lightning/micro USB adaptor > MDI working correctly?

000051446Q is the part number for the MDI lightning connector. £40inc. Will work no issues. Which headunit - can you put all your music on an sd card?

Do you have the mdi lead that you can use with a USB end? If so plug the standard lightening connector to USB in, ( the white lead you get with the phone )

Can you not stream using BT, or use the AUX ?

Yes I am aware I could use BT and/or the AUX port, but as I have already paid £175 for a MDI connection, it would be a shame to not to get it to work.

I have just ordered a VW lightening mdi lead, so lets hope that works!

I have iPhone 5s connected to my MDI using an iphone5 lead. Works perfectly. Why bother getting an iPhone 4 lead & a convertor? That's just silly.

(Frreedom). I don't understand your answer. My iphone 5c lead is lightening to usb (which dovetails into a three pin plug). I need a bespoke Skoda/VW (etc) lead to plug into the MDI. How do I connect the two items? Either I have to buy some sort of adaptor? or I have to buy a lightning MDI lead (from VW). Can you expand on your point? Happy to be informed if you think I have missed a trick with a different option...?

Larryhud, was that directed at me? Fireblade....

Yes, sorry - I don't know where the user ID is?!... just looked at the picture...

Ignore that, just spotted the heading  - doh

A lot of vag cars come with 2 media device interface ( mdi ) leads, 1. iPhone 4 lead 2 . USB lead The white lead that's in the ipone5 box ( that connects to the white plug ) will plug into the USB lead.... Hope this helps...

Fireblade, ok I get that, but the advice at the top of this thread advises against any sort of USB interface (micro or otherwise). It would be cheaper doing it that way, but can you comment on the above from Kenny R?

The reason I suggested this option as OP suggested he had this lead for his Nano.

We also have iPhone 4s and an iPhone 3GS. We have two separate MDI cables - one has the old iPod dock connector, the other has the iPhone 5 (lightning) connector. We just unplug one cable and plug in the other when needed.

When Apple did the iOS 7.1 release all my non Apple Lightning leads stopped charging my 5S...  so they now actively block non licensed cables. So I had to get some licensed Belkin ones from eBay (cheaper than Apple's own but still licensed) and voila they all charge and sync again.

So make sure whatever Lightning cable you use is in fact a "licensed to Apple" one.

I know this thread is mega old but THANK YOU for the part number. My partner has just got a Fabia Estate 2014 and had the 30 pin plug in the media outlet. I bought this lightning one from eBay for £15 and it works perfectly with the Swing radio.
