Changing oil on a CR170

Featured Replies

Hi all

Anyone done any oil changes on a CR170 yet ?

Just wondering how accessible the filter is, and any special tools needed to get it out ?

Only had a very quick glance, I presume it's a replaceable paper filter, that needs a plastic cap unscrewing first (like other VAG TDIs I've had before).

Thanks for any info...

Can't imagine its that much different from a CR110?  If so, few problems.

On my 110, you have to move a small (vacuum?) pipe to one side, to gain full access to the filter. Torx T30 from memory for the screw that holds that to the cyl head.  Once moved you then have full vertical access to the filter cover and housing.

It helps to have the right size (??mm) socket for the plastic housing.

The filters themselves are paper cartridge type, with a plastic stem that fits into the base and slots vertically into the base of the housing bowl. Decent filter should come with two fresh O-rings. One (small) for the plastic stem. One (large) for the cover.  Seems there two depths of stem though.  Mine has the shorter. Filter MAHLE OX388D matches. Not the alternative, long stem, filter that the Opie Oils web site suggested for my car's registration (first time I've known Opie be wrong in years of using them!).

The design does mean though that the filter isn't symmetrical, end to end. There's a Top and a Bottom, with slightly different diameter central hole. So you have to watch to make sure you put the replacement in the right way up.  Not difficult. Just awareness.

Hope that helps?  I'll try to check that filter cover socket.......

Great stuff, thanks.

Sounds like the filter setup is very similar to the PD130s I've owned before then. I remember the filters being marked with a "Top" on one end.

As I work approximately 20 yards from a TPS, I'll pick up genuine filters etc from there, hopefully if they have my VIN they should give me the right ones.

I'm hoping the socket size is 32mm as that's what I ordered off Ebay yesterday :)

If you could post up which one's needed and the P/N,I would appreciate it.

Mines due to be changed soon.

Thanks
