Vrs Gearbox Issues

Featured Replies

Afternoon,

I've done some searching and cant find the answer im looking for, sorry if this has been covered before.

I have a 55 plate Fabia Vrs which has devloped a whine when driving in  gear. The pitch seems to increase with the revs but its loudest at around 1800rpm.  The noise is more obvious when crusing along (no load) as apposed to accelerating (under` load). It sounds alot like a bearing and the noise disappears when the clutch is disengaged so i was woundering whether it could be the release bearing? Its just about done 75k and i always thought that the 6 speed gearboxes were pretty solid. I havent changed the gear oil yet but that was my first thought. That would give me an idea of the condition of the gearbox, i did read that the input shaft bearing can sometimes cause issues.

If anyone has any suggestions i would appreciate it, its a fair job to get the gearbox out so i want to make sure i have the right bits to put it back together haha.

Is there a test for the release bearing?

Thanks, Lloyd.

Okay so had a play with the car, managed to get a video of the niose (not sure how to upload it) and also noticed after you pointed it out that i can here a faint grumble when the car is ideling out of gear with the clutch out. From the video it seems to be whining all the time, i couldnt here it over then engine when accelerating before. I think it might be the release bearing... Better than a gearbox i spose haha.

I did the exact same thing today - went out in the car and also noticed you can hear a faint grumbling when you let the clutch out.

I'll be taking it to to a VAG mechanic just to see what he says anyway :)

Ps. I am keen on hearing the noise in your video, do you have a Youtube, Flikr or Photobucket account?
