1.4 TDI - Whining Gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My Fabia has always made a distinct whine when cruising along, mainly at 2000rpm or just above and speeds of 25mph - 60mph, over these speeds I think the road noise and engine noise drowns out the noise.

Up until now, I just assumed it was something to with the turbo, however, I recently noticed that the noise disappears as soon you dip the clutch which suggests that it is something gearbox or clutch related. Just recently, I have noticed what can best be described as a bit of rumble when you first engage 4th gear at around 35mph which disappears as you go over 40mph.

The car drives OK, however I notice that some days the gearbox feels really smooth whilst on other days it feels a little notchy - this is unaffected by weather conditions or whether the car is warmed up or not.

I can't feely any vibration in the clutch and haven't had any difficulty getting into gear.

Can anyone offer some advice on what may be the problem and how to best approach it? I was thinking of getting the gearbox oil changed for starters. The car has done 80,400 miles.

Thank you,

Changing the gearbox oil might not cure it, but the condition if the old oil might give you an indication of the internal condition.

Thank you, I'm hoping it's not something too serious. Tbh it's my first car so I'm not really keen on checking/changing the oil myself. I'll have to take it to a garage

Thought I'd update this, the diagnosis by my mechanic is a worn input shaft bearing on the gearbox, NOT the clutch release bearing. The solution is to replace the gearbox with a new one or get the current one reconditioned OR buy a used one. I've been told that it should be okay for a bit longer as you can barely hear it...

My clutch was slipping and worn out too so that has been replaced but it's not connected to this problem.
