strange warning 'bong' after engine turns off

Featured Replies

hi

I have a 61 plate skoda Octavia 2ltr diesel.

It does plenty of miles circa 25k pa and lots of long motorway runs.

Sometimes when I am parked up I have the doors open for work so I can get tools and equipment in and out.  After a while I get a 'bonging' noise and sometimes after 15 mins I get a warning from the radio its going to shut down.

If I start the car and run for 5 seconds then turn off problem goes away for a while, then repeats.

Never had any probs starting car and garage checked battery on last service and they said all ok.

Any ideas what the bong is for - nothing on warning screen in dash

hope you can hlep

Do you have a phone paired with the car?

I get this as well and assumed it was because I only do short journeys and leave the stereo on while cleaning the car, and a sa result my battery would not be fully charged.

But looking at the miles you do this would not seem the case.

Lights/indicator left on?

Does the bong happen the same time as the interior lights going off? The stereo is a standard feature and has been for years, on the mk1 you just need to turn the stereo on and off without putting the ignition on.

Basically your car is just telling you that you have left the doors open and it's automatically switching stuff off so you don't get a flat battery, not because it's going flat, there's a set time programmed into it

Its the 'low battery' warning sound

Mine did this...eventually I had a new battery under warranty and it didnt do it again

The standard battery on the Octavia CR is a poor one..mine is 61aH and lasted just under 3 years

Definitely a low battery warning. First noticed it when a cool bos was plugged in to the Scout, whilst loading it for hols. It now occurs a few minutes after leaving the boot lid open. Battery must be on its way out.

Mark.

As ChrisRs above.

On the Superb you get a very, very brief 'low battery' message on the dash display at the same time as the 'bong', but if you weren't already looking at the dash you'd never see it before it went away. Perhaps the same warning message shows on the Octavia dash when it sounds? I just happened to be looking at the dash when it went off!

I vote duff battery too. Mine did this until I got a new battery.

Same here. A message comes up on the Bolero if that's on but otherwise you wouldn't know why. I'm going to see what the highest spec battery can be gotten in the same dimensions and go with that.

thanks everyone - really helpful

my suspicion was battery as well.

It started after I gave the battery a bit of a hard time one night as I left the side lights on for a couple of hours because of where I was, so my thoughts were its drained down a bit and never quite recovered.

Would it be worth sticking it on a charger ever few weeks to top it up?

On the battery rating - certainly worth investing an upgrade if buying a new one.

Octavia CR TDI's seem to have 61mAh fitted, but for example our Seat TDI has 80mAh....... 3 years old and still going strong; never an issue.
