Floor soaking wet.... Strip interior?

Featured Replies

Some of ya may have seen on the fb page my vrs had a leak and the carpets are soaked. After an hour of wet dry vac last night they still are soaked. I'm wondering will it hold the water meaning taking interior out and cleaning it?

Windows open 2inches, heater aimed at the floor on full...

it depends on how wet it s tbh, as to whether it will hold water long term

It's really wet to be honest. I think it may be best to take interior out,

Did you find the leak? Are you sure it's not still coming in?

No iv found it, today was really sunny in Dublin so there was no rain. It happened yesterday during a really heavy rain fall. The panel where the wiper motor is was full of water

That is most likely your bulkhead drain channels block causing water to rise and fall into interior. Remove wheel arch liners and clean out the crud behind. Then free the drain channels.

Yeah I cleaned them out last night so it is sorted it's just a matter now of drying out interior. The sound deadening seems to be holding a lot of water so the wet dry vac is limited

i left windows open overnight once(i used the remote to close windows and was out of range and did not check doh!) and it poured with rain, Car interior and floor was soaked.

I managed to set blowers on feet and have on hot each time I drove with windows open as dam hot . I tried to soak up any visible water with old towels and sat on towels for few days. Also left windows slightly open at every chance this seemed to dry up the floor and seats ok.

Removing seat is pretty simple really. Remove plastic runner covers and the front bolt and then you can slide seat back and pull up to remove. Unplug the seat belt warning plug under seat before you pull out first though. Carpet is more tricky as you need to remove Center consul to get carpet back.

I plan on just folding back enough so that I can get the wet dry vac in and give it a try

I did mine a couple of weeks ago while I was swapping my carpet!

I took the sound deadening out and stick it in the sun for 4-5 days to dry it all out!

The carpet I just threw away because it was grubby anyway!

Once the carpets were out I used tea towels to dry the floor and started putting it all back together once everything was dry and leak free! ;-)

Of you put anything in damp,it will stay damp!

It will also mean you spend 45mins trying to demist/defrost the screen when it's cold again! ;-(

If your not confident in removing the interior then hire a dehumidifier for a week and stick it inside. It takes a little while to show any results. They work better if left on constantly.

Newspapers soak up water brilliantly. Just keep replacing them every day.

Not a good idea to put anything in damp agree , but if it is damp to start with like Underlay etc you can dry it out. It will not stay damp. You just have to provide the conditions for it to dry out.

If OP has to drive car about he may not have option to pull carpet right out and could pull back carpet and just and newspaper under it for a few days and keep replacing it. Then as mentioned have heater on full to feet with windows open will help. Aircon on will help. Also putting on the little crystal tubs you get from pound shop also pulls out moisture. (they work very well in my parked up people carrier) . Sit them on the floor when not driving.

i had similar on my old a4 b5 avant, removed passenger seat and rear seats, then folded up passenger side carpet and put a fan heater in it, took about 6 hrs to dry it out!

my plan is to fold the carpet back, and use a wet vac to get as much of the water out as I can tthen gonna leave the car running in my garden with the heater on while carpet is folded back., iv noticed it getting a lot drier over the few days, but will get at it the weekend.
