Anybody tried this, window fully open or closed fine, reassuring clunk, window half way down sounds like a 70's POS JapCrap, really cheapo, hollow tinnyness not very nice. Is this standard or do I need to see a service centre ?

Mine is the same - the window rattles in the frame when closing the door.

Finest quality VAG products in action mine and I would say everybody else's is the same. I thought my window was going to snap in half the other day. I shall check at work tomorrow as a mk3 Octavia is a common sight (even the VRS) on our camp.

VAG have cut production costs significantly with the MQB platform; I wouldnt say build quality has suffered as such rather the general robustness of the car. One key area is the doors...they are v light and dont shut with quite the same fast, solid thunk of Golf size VAG products of old.

If I had to level any kind of criticism of the new platform its that compared to the Mk2 it does feel slightly "tinny"......that said it does mean a 2.0 TDi estate weighs very little more than a Fabia and only aids performance and efficiency; a worthy trade off I think.

Mine does the same when the windows are open. i seem to remember that my old MkII also suffered from this a little but was nowhere near as bad as the new motor!

Not a big problem for me - usually I keep my windows closed.

Anyway it sounds really bad...

Mine too.  If you keep a couple of fingers pressed lightly on the glass as you shut the door it doesn't rattle.

SWMBO has banned me from puting two fingers anywhere near the windows at any point in time since a slight altercation on the M25 with a Ladies Rugby team travelling in a mini coach. I can tell you, they were anything but ladylike.

The results are in 3 x Elegances, 4 x VRS (2 hatches 2 estates) all with the horrible cheap 80's sounding door closing with the windows open. I guess we should call it a characteristic of the car then !!
