CAN gateway incorrectly coded, causing major issues

Featured Replies

Hi Guys..

Tryjng to rejuvenate this thread as very relevant.
Please help ive just tried to code a new CAN gateway and really balls it up!!!
The car battery seems to have drained and wont even jump start either..
Ive reverted long coding to as it was.. but in my haste when i made changes to installation list i didn't note which options were originally checked..
Im guessing if I have a list of those I can work backwards n start again..

Btw CAN gateway is flagging up incorrect coding fault also..

Please offer your much needed expertise

The incorrect coding fault should tell you which controllers are installed but not configured in the gateway.

^^^^^ What he said :)

Do an auto-scan, it will tell you what is installed and mark as incorrectly coded.

Use the installation list, not long coding as a couple of things changed (Steering Angle Sensor is no longer 00 for example) Go by name not by number.

Just noticed that I can't be that far from you if you need some help.

7N0 907 530F CAN Gateway..

To my knowledge all components are compatible.. what am I doing wrong

What firmware have you gone for? That model of Columbus can only go to 4020...

  • Author

Yep Adamal did the 4020 firmware... playing about with VCDS again this morning seems the sound returned upon coding unit as vw unit rather than skoda..

Coding as a VW unit might give some red lighting. The sound might be to do with the premium sound system option being ticked and not having it or vice versa if coded as Skoda.

The battery drain seems very odd given you have updated the gateway - have never heard of that one. Perhaps it is worth trying the 1200 vuci file on the Columbus if you haven't already as perhaps you have unmodified 4020 firmware causing a problem. The vuci 1200 file does the modification I think.

Im guessing the ones highlighted in blue are just due to the antenna set up on a Columbus being different to stream.

Which leaves

Telephone,

Immobilizer which cant be reached for diagnosis

CAN Gateway

  • Author

Cheers Adamal i did expect the backlighting to turn vw red when i did the coding but remained green, but as you suggest the coding does have premium sound checked, so ill take that off and revert to skoda unit.. see if that works!!

I cant seem to source the vuci file is it normally installed within the firmware update???

PM me your email mate and I will send the iso across.

Nothing I do seems to alleviate the signal to immobilizer fault code or that of the telephone although telephone and BT are functioning fine.

The second one is alleviated by unticking microphone diagnostics or similar I think.

Have you definitely got an immobiliser - might simply be ticked and not relevant?

Im guessing the ones highlighted in blue are just due to the antenna set up on a Columbus being different to stream.

Yes. Columbus has 2 aerial inputs and Stream only 1. The aerial sould be connected to the one closest to the centre of the unit as it does both AM and FM. The other only FM.

Cheers guys... yeah i thought it would just be the antenna..

Er ok at risk of looking like an absolute muppet.. doesnt the vrs come with immobiliser standard.. I thought it was alarm that was opt extra

Oh adamal also the original can gateway taken out of car was coded with immobiliser in installation list.. does this not suggest there is one

Total guess on my part for the immobiliser!! You are probably right it is standard but just thought I would rule out the obvious! Mike's point is pertinent too...

Adam

Every car sold in the UK since about 1996 has had to have an immobiliser fitted as standard.

Did you have the immobiliser fault showing with the old gateway?

Once you have installed the new gateway, remember that AT ONE POINT before it was coded correctly, it will still have been connected, with the ignition on, with the coding WRONG, so will have stored various fault codes throughout the other modules. You will need to go through ALL the installed modules and clear the fault codes in EACH ONE before doing a final code clear of the new can gateway.

As said, a retrofit Columbus will ALWAYS bring up fault codes in its module as there is only one antenna lead to two inputs on the radio. Even with an aerial splitter the fault code still appears.

Also worth noting is that if the car has got a retrofitted maxidot unit -- in other words if it didn't originally have a maxidot -- then you will get an immobiliser fault because the EEPROM in the cluster has been overwritten. The immobiliser (which is standard fit on all Octavias) will still work perfectly even though it shows a failure fault in the VCDS scan.

A further point to mention -- the original gateway only has one engine module as address 01. The 7N0 has both Engine 1 and Engine 2 modules. Make sure only the engine 1 is selected.

Mike

Cheers Mike missed this post!!

I have gone through all modules and cleared all fault codes, then have gone back to CAN Gateway and again cleared fault codes, once you close controller and restart vcds, the faults marked above continue to come up.

Adamal kindly sent me a vuci iso file to upgrade to my firmware currently on 4020.. succesfully done , so now with updated modified firmware and correct vuci file to fix battery drain, correct gateway, what the hell am i doing wrong!!!!!

Once again the battery is flat as a pancake!!! the battery is in good working order checked my meter and alternator all working as should.
