Fitted front flaps and...

Featured Replies

Hi I fitted some front mud flaps to my octy and while I was laid on floor I discovered a problem!!

On drivers side the sill has got some paint missing, its the rough underseal part. (I will get a pic in a moment).

Can I diy this? I dont have any spare cash if its got to be done professionally. Is there any steps I can take to reseal it?

I have a small tin of black hammerite smooth and feel I need to sort this asap. The sill is still solid and there only appears to be a little surface rust, so its at early stages at a guess??

Thanks.

Just scrape of the loose underseal around it and remove the rust and paint over it.

Can I treat the rust or will it need grinding back? Also what should I paint it with?

I'd grind it then wax oil it then paint on top in the colour of your car.

Dunt have the tools or confidence to grind it back. Was hoping it would be a simple at the side of the road jobby. Im abit gutted because ive not long ago paid for all 4 corners and boot respraying. Now ive noticed this im worried its going to rot away in time with not having funds anymore.

If not u can go buy some Kristen from Halford. Use a wire brush and sand paper till its clean then wax oil and paint. Grinding would just be faster and easier.

Yh dam auto correct lol

i would not use wax oil and paint as wax oil is horrible stuff to paint over.

I am sure Hammerite has rust inhibitors in it anyway.

As it is kinda visible i would just wire brush it  an paint with silver hammerite hammer effect that will match the other paint t. If you don't have silver just use the black smooth you have for now and touch up later.

Cool thanks mate. I will probably do that then.

How far should I peel the paint or should I cut around it. Looking at it if I was to continue picking at it I could go on forever untill its all gone. I just want to patch that area.

The paint thats peeling is right rubbery

Because it's wax

Ok so I will cut around the bits that have come away and fill in with the hammerite.

If your not going to use a wax I'd make sure you put a lot of paint on or it will happen again very fast.

Not sure what your going to do about the bit between the wing and sill. Without taking the wing off it will be hard to protect it.

Theres still the original wax/paint in that gap. I will just clean it up best I can and get a good few layers on. I think you have to leave hammerite for a while between coats. I will paint it on thick and then get a silver hammerite to make it discrete.

Buddy don't make it more complicated then it needs to be. It is not wax on the original car, it is a rubberised based sealant (like tiger seal) that can be painted over. Yes if you start to scrap it you will unpick much more than needed. Just get a Stanley knife and score a 10mm circle wider than your current area. Then pull that away. If the area looks like new paint then that is as far as you need to go. If the rubber sealant is loose or hanging off this is another indication you need to go back further. Then apply a coat of hammerite on the area. One coat is enough to cover it and protect is for now to start with. Hammerite is designed to be used on metal surfaces for outside so is good enough. Then a day or two later clean and give another coat. Job done. I have used silver hammerite on my seals loads of times and the areas covered have lasted well. Just check it now and then to feel happy all is well.

I think you will find it is a wax. I work in various car plants servicing ventilation systems and they call the booths wax booths. Its sprayed from a gun. They do use a silicon looking substance up in the wheel arches in all the nooks and cranny's. This is then covered in a wax then sent through the spray booths.

I do not believe it is wax.  Certainly on that seal area.

Yes it is sprayed from a gun to allow a thick consistency and uniform coating but it is a rubberised coating when it set's

Wax implies a greasy substance which the car does not have on it.

Getting back to the OP original question of how to paint a small area, think he has enough info to help him now... :D

LOL ok were leave it at that. Let us know how u get on.
