got an 8.1 update last night.

Now have Cortana installed. Not really sure what to make of it yet. Didn't think it was coming to the UK.

I think it was always meant to be coming to the UK but needed to be adapted to work better with the accents here, I fired up the 925 to see if it had received the 8.1 update which it has but didn't see any sign of Cortana yet - is that only with the developer preview?

John

Think it's only on Developer Preview - according to WP website, it's only available in the US, at this time.

I thought you were running 8.1 already via Developer Preview?

Yes but I'm still getting updates even on the preview.

I had cortana when i had my lumia 920(s) had to go by setting region etc to US.

got my 930 now and just had the cortana update.

I do like cortana, she does actually seem to understand voice commands and gets them right virtually all the time for me.

you can also have some fun, ask her

"do you know clippy"

"what is clippy doing"

"do you know steve balmer"

"do you know bill gates"

"do you know siri"

"open the pod bay doors"

Mine isn't doing any of those easter eggs. Just does a search on bing.

do you have Cortana?

Just tried it on mine (with Cortana) and she does the Easter eggs for me.

Yup definitely. Quick google shows it to be a relatively common issue.

She'll talk for making appointments etc but anything odd just reverts to a bing search

hmm

hmm, don't know then.  she works fine whenever i say the phrases.

Grrrrr I still have to press an attachment TWICE to view it - once to download and then again to view it. Why can't I just tap it once?

Sat nav voice commands now come out via BT :wall:

Never did before but since 8.1 upgrade they do - keep interrupting the radio, very annoying. Doesn't appear to be an option to switch it off either.

Haven't tried that yet. Does the car treat it as an incoming call? That would be a PITA.

The Ester Eggs have started working now. No idea why there hasn't been another update. Even got it singing "Danny Boy".

Yep - cuts the stereo.

In 8.0, it would just come through the Lumia's loudspeaker, loud enough to hear, when in an area I didn't know I would just turn the stereo down to help. Since the upgrade to 8.1, when the phone is paired to BT it comes via that.

Will have to do some searching on the Windows Phone forums (wpcentral seems to be a good one!)

I'll try it when I go home and see what it does with the Honda BT system.

Does the same with the sat nav and my parrot ck3100 (and SWMBO's Micra bluetooth).

I found it useful at first, but getting tired of it now...

See if the 8.1 update hasn't automatically activated Media streaming via bluetooth on your phone.

I recently reset my SIII to factory settings and I got the fright of my life l when the satnav instructions came out of the cars speakers. I had to manually untick bluetooth audio streaming in settings.

Number crunching.

The percentage of internet devices detected running Windows 8.1 = 5%

Number of people registering on an international dating site who go meet someone overseas = 5%.

Thank god they arent the same 5% !

As far as I am aware, there is no such option or setting in my Lumia 625

Had a play last night.

To start with I got nothing out the sat nav at all.Nothing via BT and nothing from the phone.

I had to tweak the BT settings to the "Use an alternative BT connection" then the sat nave started coming through the BT system.

The Honda does a bit of an irritating double 'bong' when you 'lift' the receiver or put it down. The sat nave did the 'drop receiver' double bong after every direction. Which was a bit irritating. Interrupting the radio to give a direction wasn't too bad and makes sense I suppose.

I'll have to check it works as a phone still.

Widnows phone 8 and windows 8 are not technically one and the same. Besides sharing the NT kernel they have very very little in common.

On the windows phone note, loved my old windows phone 7 device, but I don't like the total lack of freedom as to what you can do on it so have moved back to Android. I remember people bitching left right and centre about not being able to upgrade from windows phone 7 to windows phone 8. There is a very very good reason for that, windows phone 7 uses the CE kernel, windows phone 8 uses the NT kernel. The kernel in terms of OS dev is perhaps the chassis or the foundations, from the ground up windows phone 7 and 8 are very different. They share the application level API's but none of the core technology, they are in essence 2 entirely unrelated systems.

Now back to windows 8 as the thread title suggests. I havent had a single issue with it.

Thread drifted a bit into Winpho.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have just upgraded my PC and have installed 8.1 on an SSD. I'm enjoying having a bit of a change, seeing as every version of Windows since my first PC on Win95 have operated in an almost identical fashion! The desktop page is familiar enough to feel at home and the metro thing is a bit of a change. So far I can't see that there is any kind of function difference that is overly detrimental. I think once I memorise all the keyboard shortcuts it could be even quicker to do thing, like the windows key + S opens a search of the whole PC, so I can find programs that way instead of start menu search etc.

I've been able to add a load more RAM too as I came from a 32bit OS, so that's nice too :) feel all nice and quick now!
