Break wear indicator showing intermittently

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just bought a Skoda approved 2010 1.8 TSI estate with 36k on the clock.  After about 600 miles the Break Wear Indicator is now intermittenly illuminating.

Doesn't always come on, and always clears with a restart.  I always thought these things worked via a wire within the pad... ie it's either always off or always on?

I haven't been down on my hands an knees yet to actually check the pads but wondered if this was a common (non) issue?  Seems to come on more when I drive 'briskly' - my wife went out earlier and no light ;-)

Nick

I had this the other week. Came on twice then disappeared.

There is no fault to clear (I checked) it's just a basic switch.

Reading around sometimes there can be a manufacturing defect in the pad or the connecting wire can need reconnected / cleaned up.

If you keep and eye on your pads / service the car regularly the wear indicators seem to be more trouble than they are worth.

Thanks Aspman - well, yes.  Never had an idicator before and can't say my life was any poorer!  I'd rather rely on my eyes and ears than a daft light which gets it wrong anyway!!

Whether it is a fault with the connection or that the pads themselves are getting close to activating the light permanently then it shouldn't worry you too much. This is why you pay a premium buying 'approved used'.

It the switch is faulty then it will be covered under warranty.

If the pads are worn after only 600 miles then they were worn when you bought the car. Skoda UK or the dealer should be bending over backwards to fix this as the car clearly was not inspected thoroughly enough prior to sale.

Interested to know if people think we paid a huge premium?

2010 plate, 1.8TSI Elegance estate, 36k miles for £8850.  Came with usual Skoda approved package (12 months warranty, RAC cover, dealer history etc)

Never ever ask anyone if you got a good deal...

No matter if you paid £2.50 for a mint low mileage Ferrari GTO with 8yr warranty, free petrol and use of chairman's favorite escort someone will crawl out the work work and tell you, "Naw your were ripped off mate, shoulda got...."

Haha, you are right - of course!  Just interested.

Cost and value are very different things.

At this price point I'm much less willing to take a 'punt', so the value is in the security of the warranty etc. for me.  (Though didn't expect the seats to be so darn uncomfortable - don't think the warranty covers a chiropractor does it?)

The 1.8 TSi is a very capable engine, I've yet to hear a bad review.

Very understated. Just enjoy it, you've paid what you think it's worth, that's all that matters.

I love the engine - after a string of average 1.8 Mondeo Duratec's, it's a breath of fresh air.  VRS is nice, but I kinda like the stealthiness of the 1.8 TSI.

Once I've sorted the buttock-ache, we'll be all good!

Mine did that after 68k, like you it didn't lit always but still was annoying. They still had pad enough for 5k or more I just wasn't to handle the "stress"

I recently changed the front pads on my 07 vrs because my warning light came on... although it stayed on for a few days it then started to go off for a while then on again.. Initially the pads didnt look too bad, but on replacing them they were awful and in the inside of the disc they were almost down to metal... mine had worn completely through the warning sensor so the cable was barely hanging on... if it was me id be getting them replaced sooner rather than later, easy to do yourself just get some pads from eurocarparts, and a couple of hours to change em over.... my brakes are perfect now!!
