A question about trading in

Featured Replies

Trading in this week (hopefully MOT is clear).

I've a stack of receipts for the car covering every service and every repair, all the old MOTs, and even my old tax disks.

Would you leave them in the car for the next owner?

I kept them mainly in the anticipation of doing a private sale but that's not happened.

On one hand as a buyer I really like to find receipts in the dash when you look at a car. On the other hand they've got my name address and personal reg on them (I've removed all the card receipts). Yes I'm paranoid.

When I traded the Honda in a couple of months ago I took most of the receipts etc out of the folder.  The car was going to auction and I didn't fancy sending a wad of paper with all my details on to someone else.  I know my name and address will be on the log book, but that's one thing I can't control.

Your name and address will be on the next owners V5C anyway

I always leave them in.

Leave them, it will help the next owner work out what work has been carried out. The invoices and receipts mean far more than just stamps in a book that can be easily faked.

Name and address will be on the next owners V5C, and a MOT and or HPI check search will show your private plate anyway.

Agree with the above. I'd leave them, too.

I always put mine in a nice plastic wallet ( 5 for £1..!) & leave with the car.

My wife recently sold a much loved Ford Puma she had owned for 10 years, the "file" looked like "War & Peace" the look of delight on the buyers face made us feel good & hopefully we will be treated to similar in future.

MOT passed, no advisories so it's deffo going as soon as the bank get paperwork out.

I always leave them with the handbook in the glovebox.  If you are trading it in back to a dealer it makes their job easier to sell the car on, hence you can argue for a better trade-in price.  I've used that argument before when I was pushing for a better deal and it certainly helped.   You're making their job easier for them!

I look at it as say you were buying that car you'd be delighted for extra history on the car so I'd leave them in!

previous owner left a stack of receipts which is one of the things that done the deal when buying it. You could always redact any personal info on them for peace of mind though

If you've already done the deal & the dealer has given you a decent price I'd offer them the reciepts etc. at handover if you think it's going to be sold by them direct. If it's likely going to auction all you'll be doing is putting extra cash in another traders pocket who's done you no favours so I'd consider keeping hold of them in case the new private owner contacts you. That way you could pass them on and cut out the middle man.

I'd only leave the previous MOTs, unless the garage/dealer who is taking your old car have a buyer lined up for it.

When I chopped my old one in the dealer specifically asked if I had any paperwork could I bring it with me when I picked up the new one. He also reminded me to take the tax disc and get a refund for it.

They're not selling it themselves mileage is too high for them.

Tax is out at the end of June so no real issue there, new one has a few months left so fair enough.

Leave them in, you're only going to bin them if you take them out.

If the dealer/trader doesn't want them they'll get binned.

If they get left in, the new owner may bin them. No issue to you really.

I have had dealers telling me that they just destroy receipts although with the switch away from physical service books, they will surely value them more.
