Auto Lights on a Pre FL?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I have a 2007 Pre FL VRS with factory Xenons and an auto dimming rear view mirror. Question is can I fit auto lights? If so what do I need?

I would like to fit a switch from a car with a chrome switch, like the Tiguan etc, I already have golf climatronic knobs on my Skoda unit so i have some chrome bits so it would match nicely. Would the MK5/6 Golf/Tiguan/Touareg one fit?

The surround on the switches are a different shape (Octavia is bigger) and the VW ones will light red not green.

**** i forgot about the colour, that's why I only changed the knobs on the climatronic unit.... bum never mind ill stick with Skoda ones, question is can i do it

You certainly can.

I did it on mine and it was really easy.

First thing it to remove the existing switch and pull the cover off the wiring connector. If all the pins are there then you're good to go. If there is one wire missing then you need to follow this post #34:

Fit your switch then enable it with VCDS.

I had to fit the wire but only took me about 20 mins. I bought the repair wire off ebay as didn't have time to get to the dealer and it was cheaper anyway.

I also changed some of the VCDS setting on the RLS (Rain and Light Sensor) to make the lights come on sooner as I found they weren't coming on sometimes when I would have them on. Work perfectly now.

Have you got a standard or chrome finish switch Phil? I've got a chrome and black finish everywhere else but I have never seen the light switch with chrome although I would like one.

Like above. Yes for VW but not for Skoda. That too for the window buttons.

No just a standard one. I have the silver trims too.

I think you can only get a black one. It looks ok to me though.

Just happy it was an easy job to fit. Got my switch for less than £20 off ebay too.

Fair enough, I definitely haven't seen one so got a bit excited there for a minute!  I would also like the window buttons with the chrome trim but not seen them for Skoda either...

This is what I have done for the Climate buttons, excuse the dust. I took the outer trims I had off, they are still in the ashtray for safe storage till i find someone who wants them.

Looks good.  I got outer chrome rings for my climatronic dials, light switch and door mirror switch from www.ebay.de (search "aluringe") and also some bits from Superskoda for around the cup holders.

Might be a bit of overload but I think it makes the interior look a little more upmarket, especially with the piano black trim I now have around my radio and climatronic since changing the panel for an FL one.

How do I get a on/off button?

Its been covered on here, but i bought a golf climate unit off ebay and swapped the buttons over, you can swap the whole front which is easier and quicker, the top middle blank can have the square tab cut out to turn it into an on/off button.

Hmm, auto lights. Another thought for the future. having said that I'm on Scandinavian day running lights, so there wouldn't be any benefit except to change the Columbus display automatically.

And another one for the list, Adam. You know what I mean!

I haven't bothered with the daytime running light setting... I like it when the lights come on and go off when going through tunnels! lol

Just do it if you can find a decent switch cheap as it's a nice simple addition.

I saw a MK2 VRS with his 'DRL' light on... fog lights during the day just make you look silly and ignorant. however I then saw a MK2 FL with his DRL proper lights on and this looked good.

The easiest way to tell DRLs from using fogs as DRLs (Chav setting) is the sidelights: they'd need to be on for fogs to be on.

Have seen the odd Passat and Superb at the side of the road whilst accompanied by an officer of the law pointing at the front. I think the confusion there is where the fogs and DRLs are in the same unit.

It would be nice though to have the features of the Auto setting separated: so you could have auto-lights and CH/LH separately. It seems that my auto-lights have a will of their own, so they'll be on in bright sunlight and insist on being on for about 5 minutes. (It did this on the previous CECM too) Sadly, whilst VCDS can make the lights come on earlier, there's no "slightly later" setting.

Interestingly in VCDS the CECM does mention DRL in a few places, so the Pre-FL cars are, in theory, capable of it. It's just a case of finding the pin assignment on the CECM. I shan't saw any more though, Mike will start getting more "ideas" :p :p

I have seen it mentioned many times on here about auto lights in bright sunlight.

They all seem to do it.

Not sure if it's a feature to help you be seen in bright light or whether the bright light confuses the sensor.
