Recommend Front Speakers

Featured Replies

I've had enough of the farty pieces of crap in the front of my car, so I'm loping for recommendations.  I don't need anything over the top as I'm not 17 anymore haha.  I have an Apline head unit.  What size am i looking at, i know their 6.5 but isn't there an issues with depth.  Any info appreciated.

I have got my eye keenly hovering over this thread for the same reason

Have you had a look in the ice section?

Funnily enough yes, just been browsing in there.  I've noticed that Tech1e has some Alpine 2 way component speakers.  Component speakers seem to be the way to go.  He's also got some spacers i noticed so looks like i will need these as well.

I had some Rainbow Audio components fitted by the guys at Source Sounds in Sheffield and they're awesome. Great place to get it sorted too; you pays your monies but you get quality from blokes who know their onions.

Either Alpine or Pioneer are the brands I would chose due to past good experience from them.

Clarkey - did you have any sound proofing in the doors? And were the speakers separately amplified or run from the head unit?

I am sure you already know Nathan: aftermarket speakers, of Alpine/ Pioneer standard are a whole different level of sound quality and power when amplified independently. The rest of the speakers can stay powered from the head unit - but I am told amplifying door speakers is a real improvement. Only problems of course are cost, lack of space for an amp, and difficulty in fitting if you are planning on doing it yourself. Something I wouldn't start doing, too many things to go wrong or break (door card clips are notorious).

Are you planning on just getting front speakers Nathan?

I am thinking of it in the future, but it would be with sound proofing and separately amplified.

Soundproofed and amplified.

Soundproofed and amplified.

Excellent - the full works then.

I can't say I have ever heard of Rainbow Audio.

How much did the soundproofing and the labour of the cost may I ask? It will give me an idea as to the ball park figure before components.

I just bought some 2nd hand Alpine Type R components for mine, so going to have fun fitting them soon.

Rainbow Audio are a German firm I believe. Very loud and very crisp and clear, plus the components I opted for fit under the standard speaker and tweeter grilles and are therefore very discreet.

I can't remember the individual price breakdowns for soundproofing and so on, plus I had a few other bits installed at the same time. I do remember however the components were £150. Call the guys at Source, they're very helpful. Better yet, if you have time go and see them, the setup in the store is very good- they'll play you a range of music through a range of components with or without subwoofers so you can hear the difference.

I've got Focal Performance PS 165 components amplified in mine, highly recommend them!

Amping proper component speakers is a must, the head unit just cant provide them enough ooomffff. . And it makes a world of difference.

Also rainbow are a well known high end audio company, not cheap tho. :)

Just had a look at the Rainbow Audio - the only stockist in England that I could locate from the Rainbow website was South Birmingham, a good hundred miles from home!

I think alpine type R speakers will suffice.

Is it possible to connect an amp, for powering front speakers, to the factory Symphony headunit?

I think I'm going to get some Apline SPG-17cs speakers.  I need to look for some adaptors and sound deadening.  I was going to bother with the rest of the speakers if I'm honest, I'm the only person who sits in the car so makes no difference haha.

I have a couple of things i need to do with the door cards off anyway i.e microswitch, reseal carriers, change speakers so i have a nice day planned once i get all my bits.

Youd need a head unit with a decent power rca output. . To run to the amp then you run the outputs from the amp back behind the head unit to the speaker wires (cut them off the headunit and connect) the speakers are then getting the signal from the amp.

Ah okay thank you for explaining that to me.

Don't worry I won't be doing installing myself. I am not that handle with screw drivers and what not, despite a Haynes Manual and plenty of time.

So it is a case of buying a new HU then basically?

Preferably one with two signal outputs to go to Amp(s).

I have an Alpine Sub and Amp from my old car but I doubt I will put it in the Fabia as I think I have outgrown it.

I've got the new style alpine type-r 6.5 comps in the front, with the adapters that i bought they fowl against door card but seeing as im doing custom door build it doesn't matter too much. however the quality is outstanding and mid range bass is remarkably good.

66mm mounting depth according to some web-blurb I read. How'd you manage that? Or have you got mildly tweaked door cards?

I have a pair of hertz 6.5" coaxial door speakers the Orange coned ones they cost me about £30 from eBay and although they are not the best on the market for the price you'll do we'll to beat them. They are loads better than the standard ones I also have them connected to an amp.

You will need spacers if you are fitting aftermarket speakers so keep that in mind.

Internally skimmed the door cards and spaced the door cards with cork slightly, very tight fit though. Hardest part is finding space for the crossovers.

Mine are 62mm and require a small foam buffer to stop them buzzing or ****ting the roll surround on the door card. The door card bends slightly when screwed down at the bottom.

Were fitted professionally but I did get a piccie showing the setup.

Jesus

that is a very busy door...

I suppose it is always going to be cramped in there isn't it once you start adding additional wiring - crossovers - and start laying on soundproofing too. Looks like it is a good job though, tidy as it can be.

I have a set of Vibe Slick 6 components with ebay spacers, the only problem ive found is that with me having manual front windows it pushed the doorcard slightly out so the winders now dont fit back on, if anyone knows a quick fix to this then let me know :)
