New car advice

Featured Replies

I have been offered a new job with another company which means the furby will end up going. Now the quandry I find my self is I have about 18K to spend ona deisel car what do you think I should choose. Golf TDI, Leon TDI ???

Advice would be appreciated

Octy II TDI

Superb TDI

Or why not just get a Furby vRS with every option?

Not the Golf as it's overpriced , but the Leon looks good and obviously the octy II is a fine choice.

18k will get you a 2.0 elegance TDI with 1500 quid to spend on options. I'd have the metallic paint , sunroof and 17" alloys and sports suspension with a couple of the little ones like maxi-dot if there was any cash left.

On the leon you'll be paying a similar price for a car that looks better on the outside but doesn't seem to have as nice an interior

Is this a trick question?

Leon looks great and goes well but isn't a patch on the OctyII for quality and solidity. The interior quality really lets it down and the dash is awfully plasticy.

Get the Golf if you want the badge but don't expect to get anything like the Octy or Leon in creature comforts. Also be prepared to pay over twice the price for options as opposed to the Skoda.

It depends what options you want. I didn't go for Xenons (shaking problem people have mentioned), leather (i've got kids), Sat Nav (I live in N.I. coverage is awful), front PDC (gimmick) or uprated audio (too much for what it is). I still got a pretty good deal I reckon. My 18k got me this:- see signature below

Its not a trick question. You are right about the Leon, looks a million dollars on the outside but looks a little yesteryear on the inside. When I was waiting for the Furby to be delivered I had an Octy II 140PS diesel (think it was the 2.0l lump) and I have to say I was very impressed. The only options that are a must for me are MP3 (not sure skoda do factory) and the climate control as I spend an awful longtime inthe car (I have done 3K this week).

is there not an option for having a car allowance thus allowing you to keep your furby?

The factory stereo and speaker upgrade is about 600 quid and that does MP3 playback.

Climate is standard on the elegance.

Octy 2 elegance comes with climate control and Cruise as std.

The price now is around

For about

For me the curtain airbags and ESP were must have options but std on the golf. Don't forget when comparing these cars that the Skoda is bigger too.

If I could have got the upgraded amp/speaker package without the MP3 playback and Audience HU mounted changer I would have.

Having said all of that, the car I was mad on before deciding on the Furb was a Leon Cupra R.....loved it.

However, I was behind a black 05 one yesterday and thought "Hmmmm, actually not as nice as I remember".

Oh, and has anyone noticed how similar the tailpipe is between the Furb vRS and the Leon Cupra R????...........almost identical.

Thought the Cupra-R had a large-ish oval pipe

Cant keep the furby even with a car allowance unless I buy it off my current company (its their car) and I dotn think that will happen because If I take this job it is with their biggest competitor. The more the spec of the Octy II is put into perspective the more value for money it seems. I was watching the WTCC today and liked the look of the new leon (goes onsale monday) will check on the availability of a diesel version and have a look. The golfs do cost a lot but they have plenty of KUDOS

Took the car back to my dealer yesterday, to get a check done, the parts guy has bought his wife the Golf 2.0l TDi, which he says is VERY nice, but @ 19k VERY OVERPRICED.

For me the curtain airbags and ESP were must have options but std on the golf.

There is 1 disadvantage about going for the Skoda. No option for electrically folding door mirrors. Ummm' date=' that's it I think.

It would have cost over 20k to get a Golf with the same spec as the Octy I went for.

Curtain airbags, ESP, and electrical folding mirrors for parking are all standard on the Superb Elegance! Don't know how good the audio is though - but it does include full sat nav.

I think you mean the wing mirrors auto adjust when you engage reverse to enable you to see the kerb like in the Audi's. I'm refering to mirrors which physically fold in towards the car at the touch of a button to save damage in tight streets etc.

The Superb is a really nice motor but I fell for the New Octy which still has plenty of space and the performance edge over the Superb especially with the new 2.0 TDi Engine. I also didn't want a car that was due to be replaced or even facelifted in the near future. TBH the Superb is just TOO big for me too. The wife and I would have it scratched and dented to bits in the first month.

Sat Nav is nice to have but useless for me in N.I.. Besides I wouldn't go for the factory fit sat nav after seeing the excellent Nissan Bird View Sat Nav. No other factory fit system i've seen compares. Pity their 2.2 Dci Engine MPG isn't as great as on paper.

Xenons are cool. No question there. I just couldn't justify effectively spending

It was originally my intention to buy a golf and as soon as the mark V came out I was round the dealers to have a butchers. I liked the new exterior but the interior just didn't feel right. It was a big step backwards from the previous model and I felt that I could spend all that money on a car that I wasn't 100% happy with.

My next stop was the seat showroom to have a look at the Altea. Again lovely looking car let down by horride looking dash and rock hard seats.

Next stop Skoda showroom to have a look at the Fabia VRS that I had just read a review about and was really only having a look out of interest.

Of course in the showroom was the new octavia. What a revelation. The build quality, the comfort, the standard spec, the size of that boot. I Knew this was the one.

And here I am one week to go until my Octy 2 L & K 2.0 tdi DSG estate, ESP, Curtain Airbags, Met Paint, TPM, arrives. And all this with a bit of discount for a smidge over 18k. Well I never.

You never, I never either!

I calculate

They do fold into the side of car, on new model year car, like the test drive elegance i had.

I thought you were getting mixed up with the auto adjust feature. If you say it's so I believe you.

No, the Superb mirrors also fold in towards the car at the turn of a switch (rather than a touch of a button). That's standard on the Elegance spec, and very useful too when parking in town.

Superb is big but doesn't feel like it on the road. Parking sensors (rear), also standard, helps the bumps, but the doors (especially rear) are big so care needed when getting out. I just think the Superb is better value than the Octy. More toys for no more money regardless of size.

The Superb is a good motor but it's getting old though and uses the older 1.9 PD engine. That's why there are such good deals around on it.

Then go for the 2.5tdi - an old engine but still with plenty of punch and great for "real" driving situations like overtaking from 40mph.
