Can someone explain to me

Can someone please explain to me how the new octavia is being classed as a small family car?

how the hell is it small?

am i missing somthing here?

It's based on the Golf platform ie. Golf with a boot. Whereas the Mondeo & Passat etc. sit a class above - large family car. The Superb for instance is based on the older Passat's chassis...:)

But the new octavia has a longer wheelbase than the golf so it has much more legroom in the back than the older one as well as the big boot.

Basically it's a lot of journalists that haven't done their research

I thought the New Octavia had the same wheel base as the New Golf?

The new Octy's bigger, the new Golf's bigger, the new Focus is bigger.

The new Passatt is bigger and the current Mondeo is the similar size to the old E Class.

Car classes are getting bigger all the time so "Small" is only relative.

The Fabia is bigger and has more interior space than the Mk1 Golf but is classed as a supermini. :D

As the Octavia is pitched againt the Golf, Focus etc, it is seen as a Small family car. Realistically it is sized inbetween these and the repmobiles and the journalists see it as such when you see road tests against cars in both sectors. It also is more spacious than most of the current crop of repmobiles so it makes more sense to place it there.

Interestingly enough the previous Octavia was put in the repmobile sized cars (family cars) in this years Auto express driver power survey, where it came second in class behind the Old Honda Accord. If it had been put in the small family car section along with the Focus, Leon, etc it would have beaten the winner of that class (honda Civic) by around 3%.

Who has classified it as that?

The latest Which report on cars (got mine today) classifies it as a large car. Superb not in there - which normally means not enough replies to be statistically significant

The new Octavia won What Car's small family car sector.

The Octavia IS small compared to a Superb and Passat, regardless of its physical size. The older Passat and Superb share the same chassis, but the Superb had much more leg room in the rear than the Passat. The Octi IS kinda small...I mean when I sit I sit full back, and there was hardly any space in the rear..just a little more than what the Fabia gives...Superb to big :)

So Octavia = small family car :)

The older Passat and Superb share the same chassis, but the Superb had much more leg room in the rear than the Passat.

I believe that the Superb was actually based on the Chinese Passat which is a "stretched" version of the Passat we get here in the UK which might explain the difference in rear leg room. :D
