To spray or not to spray?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I've had my '57 octavia VRS in blue for 2-3 months and I 'revealed' some stone chip damage/corrosion when power washing it. The metal is now visible on a couple places on the sill. From reading the forum stone chip damage in this area is common. Some of the areas are slightly superficially corroded. The other side had some fine bubbling.

Now, I've booked it in for a respray later this week both sills for £250 and will fit front mud guards. I'm probably going to keep the car for 18 months - 2 years. My question to you is, am I being sensible in getting it sorted now before the rust develops, or shall I wait a year or two until I come to sell it? If I do it now, there's the risk that I could get more stone chips. But if I wait, could the corrosion worsen over that length of time to the degree that it will cost a lot more to fix, or even fail MOT?

I'll try and get a picture

Cheers

Jamie

Personally I'd rather enjoy having a freshly painted motor myself, not spend £250 for someone else's pleasure

Spend now, £250 now or you could end up shelling out loads more in the future replacing parts and not just painting.

Definitely re-spray the sills. When I bought my car the sills were in poor condition (stone damage and rust spots) and I was able to knock the price down by more than £250 because of it. Paint the sills, have the peace of mind and protect your investment.

Get the stone chip paint layer raised up as high as you can on the sills. That might prevent anything happening in the future.

Good advice, thanks everyone.

I'll ask about the stone chip paint layer although I was only going to get the front half done. I was also thinking about getting some clear vinyl wrap to stick on the sill, like the stickers on the rear wheel arches. Can anyone advise if this is worth it, what wrap to use, and if it's easy to do without a heat gun?

Thanks again

Unless it's a silly price I'd think that stonechip film would be a good move in those areas if doing the chip proof paint is too expensive.

Mud guards don't seem to help that much.

Thanks Aspman. I've taken it to the body shop today and they're going to raise the level of the chip proof paint to the level of the 'lip' over the whole length of the sill for no extra cost. Pretty good, eh.
