Rear wheel bearing job..........help/advice please

Featured Replies

Hi all

My Octavia Estate 1.9tdi pd (engine code BKC) year November 2005 has developed a wheel bearing noise coming from the rear.

The wheel bearing has only done 171,000 miles !! (I dont suppose it is still in warranty......lol).

Can someone please let me know if this is a straight forward job, thanks.

My main worry is whether I need a puller or not. If anyone can give me a link to a previous photo set or video etc that would be great thanks.

All advice gratefully recieved

Thanks all

Tom

Hi tom, to the best of my knowledge I do not think that you need a puller, you just undo the hub nut and it should slide off.  However if you are extremely unlucky and the bearing has welded itself to the shaft you may need a puller, but this is very rare.

Hope this helps.

Given the mileage you're probably correct, but double-check it's not excessive tyre noise due to mis-alignment.

I had a noise like a wheel bearing , bought a new hub/bearing set , but changed tyre  and noise has gone.

As usual, fantastic replies

Thanks to everyone who read/posted a reply.

Yes, I was aware of the alignment issues. I have noticed several post on here about it.....I think I will have it checked but I must say that it sounds like the bearing is going home - only slight, though but these cars are so good.

Thanks again, all

Tom

If you suspect that the rear tyres could be the cause of your wheel bearing noise you could just jack the back of the car up one side at a time and check the tyres for sawtoothing / and or swap the wheels front to rear to see if this cures your noise before you go investing in any other work.

OK chaps

Thanks for all the comments......... As usual, excellent.

It would appear that this job is do-able by me but from what I am researching it seems that the replacement is this...........

I presume the bolt is a Torx/multi spline bit...Anyone know the size? I do have a set but is it some outrageous one off size?

Do you know I might just do both if it is the easier end of the scale

I will keep monitoring

Thanks

Tom

Ive never heard of that make of bearing before,it might be better getting one from your local motor factor such as Eurocarparts etc. I made the mistake of fitting a cheap bearing to my mk1 octy vrs.....it lasted 1000 miles before i had to replace it again with a known good quality make.it was fine for the next 20k until i traded the car in for a newer octy.
