LED strip lights, types.

Featured Replies

Anyone a fan or not? Had any good/bad experiences with the kit? Have been playing around with stuff for kitchen pelmet lights and TV/lounge mood lighting.

So far I've bought 3 types from China/HK and UK.

One "full kit" consisting 5M of strip containing 150 of 5050 RGB emitters, IR remote and power supply. From the UK.

Two strip of rigid/semi-rigid 500mm, containing 36 of 5630 emitters in an angled extruded alloy shell (angled for installation in display cabinets etc).

Five strips of rigid/semi-rigid 500mm, containing 36 of 5050 emitters in U shaped extruded alloy shells (complete with plastic mounting/screw brackets at the end.

Am currently waiting on a 433mhz RF remote dimmer and a power supply for the kitchen stuff. Going to be using 1.5M of the 5050 strips and it'll still be "quite bright".  :)

I have the 5M strip draped around the false wall shrouding the TV and wall bracket. Main PITA with it is the IR codes conflict with those for TVs etc. Hence changing volume/channel can start a frenzied light show!

The five strips of 5050s took an age to arrive. I genuinely thought that they'd been lost. Was only waiting for the expected delivery window to expire before requesting a refund. They arrived with 1-2 days to spare (ordered 1st May, arrived 3rd June!!!). The more assertive may well have put the claim in after 30 days and ended up with them for free!

Not currently looking to replace main room lighting with them. There are some concerns/reservations about the usual 5M style strips when used constantly, like they dim/degrade or fail.

Got 25m of 5050 60/m warm white and 25m 5050 30/m rgb in the lounge diner.

In hindsight the warm white would have been sufficient in 30/m as even dimmed very low it still gives off a lot of light.

Got cold white on the back of the TV.

Cooker hood bulbs I replaced with 4 0.3m strips of the warm white. As its behind the glass it was running to hot, however, I got some big heatsinks for it.

Most successful application to date is outside lighting on my mums stables. 5no 1m strip of 5050 cold white 60/m mounted at 45 degree above the doors kicks out a huge amount of light.

It's amazing how cheap this LED kit is becoming. It opens up a whole load of opportunities for discreet lighting in the house and outside.

Combined with an IR switch (still surprisingly expensive) you can also add LED's to the bathroom.

Ummm, not really. Got an RF remote with dimmer, blinker and programmes for £3.73, delivered within 2 days from eBay. With it being RF, I reckon the blob itself doesn't even need to be in the bathroom.

Now if you wanted a plate switch - though stil LV, can get a plate switch/duimmer for £12 from HK or China.... Or pay through the nose - £24 in the UK for something that looks worse.

Thanks, that's handy to know for my next project.
