Clutch or gearbox problem?

Featured Replies

I drive a 2006 Octavia vrs. When I put it in to 1st

gear from neutral it tends to crunch or grind as it goes in and the clutch is fully in. Also it sometimes grinds when changing up a gear when driving.

Can anyone give me an idea if its the clutch or gearbox problems?

how many miles?    does it crunch in reverse too?    may be a dragging clutch but it should change up even if dragging a bit       try changing the oil----can't hurt

112,000 on the clock. Been out today and it didn't do it at all.

As being the cheapest of the possible answers, I'd start by checking if hard acceleration causes revs to rise faster than road speed. If so, you've got a worn clutch.

Nest try bleeding the clutch (hydraulic) or adjusting it (cable).

a dragging clutch is not also  a slipping clutch,   however unless it's had a life of long (motorway type) work I think you've had your money's worth out of it

Sorry if this isn't relevant, but I had a similar problem with my Fiesta. A couple of things helped me, firstly I adjusted the cables that run from the gearstick to the gear selector on the gearbox, secondly I checked the gearbox oil level (mine was quite low), thirdly the brake fluid was changed and as the clutch is hydraulic that made a difference too.

It seems to crunch when I stop at junction and put it in to 1st quite a lot.

Quite common on these gearboxes is this problem.

First thing to do is to try and re-align the gear linkage. There are some videos on youtube showing how this is done.

That's the cheapest thing as it's free!

If that doesn't help then I would suggest getting the gearbox oil changed. It's meant to be 'sealed for life' but just wait till you see the colour of the old oil that comes out. 9 times out of 10 this cures a crunching VAG gearbox especially at your kind of mileage.
