2004 VRS Air Con clicking noise

Featured Replies

Hi all.

My VRS started making quite a loud clicking noise from near the glove box a few days ago. It seems to air con related and can be stopped by switching the air con on and recycling the air.

I've taken a video:

(Volume up!)

Any ideas what this could be? I've seen a few threads on this forum but nobody's said they've had a particularly loud noise.

Just bumping this in the hope that someone will be able to help, before the wallet takes a good beating!

Sounds to me like something is stuck in the blower motor but im just offering opinion, it could be something completely unrelated

It could be one of the motors that drives the flaps which control the airflow.

I had a similar issue.. turned out to be a parking ticket in the fan.

drop the glovebox out and you can easily access the blower and it twists to unlock off its mount.

I think I've found the cause or at least something related to it.  I noticed some drops of water pooling in the 'engine bay floor' near the radiator.  I first thought it might be a radiator leak but after feeling the hoses etc I noticed one in particular has water near its connections/joints.  It's a metal pipe and cold to the touch.  I'm sure it's a refrigerant leak and the water droplets are the refrigerant.  I'm guessing the clicking noise is caused by maybe a drop in the pressure during air circulation or something.

The refrigerant is a gas so it won't drip just evaporate. What you are probably seeing is condensation dripping off one of the air con pipes. If you had a leak the air con will stop working very quickly.

Thanks Trundlenut.  Could I just confirm from other Octy drivers that after a run of more than about 30 mins, there are water droplets collecting around and below this metal pipe?

The compressor is on the left hand side of the engine (looking from the front) between the engine and the rads and the pipework runs round the engine, so that does sound like one of the air con hoses which you expect to be cold.
