Boot closing on hatch

Featured Replies

The boot nearly took the arm off me this evening! I usually open the boot part only and it just pops up by itself. This time when I opened it the lid stayed closed and I had to force it open. Then as I was putting stuff in the boot it forced itself down shut without warning!!

I've tried it a few times since and it is the same thing. Very difficult to open and when it does it forces itself shut, a bit like the auto close function. It feels like a spring mechanism has failed but the car is only a few months old .The hatch or dual part is working ok.

I hate to admit it but I'm beginning to think that my last Superb was a better car. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong....!

I meant 'hydraulic' as opposed to spring

The saloon boot closed itself!?

I know that when you press and hold the remote the saloon boot pops open via a tensioned spring but I can't understand how it could close itself?

Only the weight of the lid and the failure of the springs could allow this surely?

Did you hear the mechanism working as the boot closed whilst it was trying to chop your arm off!?

I know it sounds bizarre but yes it is pushing itself downwards again, like somebody is pressing down on the boot as I'm opening it.  When I hold the remote the boot pops but only a few mm (as opposed to the usual self opening it normally does) and then it has to be forced up by hand.  It is making a strange click when it opens but when it closes I can hear the closing mechanism working as normal

The boot opens on 2 small hydraulic struts hidden in the side of the hatch locking mechanism on the hatch, I can only think one of these have failed and is pulling the boot down,

They couldn't work out which strut it was so both are on order now and will be replaced next week along with the replacement ignition switch (see my other thread on ESC error)!   I will just use the hatch for now to keep fingers intact :).  It is a known issue according to the dealer and I think I've seen it on here before too but still a bit frustrating.  Interesting how I had two separate problems within hours of having the car serviced

Replacing both struts is a good thing, it would be more annoying if the original one failed later.

Great result in the end though!

This is good news,it's also a good reason to keep your business local, until,at least the warranty period expires. I think I may do the same. Did the "twitchy" problem get sorted, I read that you say Audi have a higher/lower profile tyre on their 18's. Explain plz. I'm a thicko when it comes to crap like that.. If the car had 17's I know exactly the tyres I'd be gettin.

Yes there is an advantage to keeping it local and they all know me there which helps.  Their follow through on issues is quite good to be fair and I'm always kept up to date on issues with parts and servicing etc.  Easier to keep an existing customer than attract a new one!

On the tyres I've seen 225/45/18s on Beemers and Audis (although I think the newer A6 have 245/45/18) so they do fit them on other VAG models.  When I say profile I mean the measurement of the height of the sidewall of the tyre or to put it another way, the amount of rubber between the car and the road!  The lower the profile the noisier and harder the ride is generally.  Obviously the bigger circumference from 17 to 18 adds to the firmer ride too.  So with the 225/45/17s on the elegance versus the 225/40/18s on the L&K there are two size factors at play - the reduced sidewall from 45 to 40 and the increased tyre size from 17 to 18.  Putting on 17s would take from the looks and require new wheels whereas putting on say 18s with the 45 profile (225/45/18) should help soften things on the road a little without having to do anything too drastic.

Its still a bit jumpy but rotating the tyres has helped a lot.  Again that is down to the lower profile tyres and with less rubber between the car and road it will be more sensitive to bumps and changes in road surfaces. Well that's my technical explanation of it anyway so hope that makes some sort of sense :)

Yep purfec. Will look for 45's

Have to agree with your comments re Barrett's.

I have checked already and there is not issue with warranty or insurance (well not on mine) if the tyres are changed. I'll wait until I get some decent wear out of them before I change though. I'm not forking out €500 to €600+ for new tyres a few months at after buying a new car

What! With only that mileage? I got around 40 to 50k kms on my 17s and they were still just about legal when I changed. I would expect less on these obviously but would hope for 35k kms anyway. Maybe I'm been optimistic.

You're towing a lot though right? So that probably doesn't help.
