Car won't start.

Featured Replies

The garage report nothing wrong with fuel system etc.

They are saying the Duel Mass Flywheel (DMF) is wearing out. Can this cause poor starting when cold?

My DMF is worn too and it doesn't cause the sort of starting difficulties you are experiencing...ie it won't start at all sometimes.

However the play in the DMF does seem to cause the engine to hunt for idle RPM for a second or two on startup.

My idling is perfect. Nice and stable at about 900rpm. How long do DMFs last on average? Mines original, and done 121k miles.

On the 2.0 TDI PD usually a lot less than that!

Mines now chattering a bit in high gears with gentle throttle at low rpm at 116k miles.

Having said that it starts perfectly and idles smooth.

Mine starts perfectly when warm, but sometimes when cold, it shudders, and can take a couple attempts to start up.

Until today, I had no idea that the dmf was even a problem. I'll have a second opinion in the coming days. I was quoted £900 to have it (and clutch) replaced.
