Roof Rails - Removal and Blanking

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone has removed the roof rails from their estate? I can see theres just a cap to remove from the outside face of the rails at each end which gives access to the bolts. Does anyone know if there are blanking plates available to seal and hide the mounting points?

Also, I doubt so but are the roof rails adding stiffness too?

I've no experience of Skoda's in this respect, however I have seen what was required to fit Roof Rails to a Mini Clubman and it wasn't for the faint hearted.

I think that you will cause yourself a great deal of work for very little return.

Sorry, the roof rails are already fitted as standard. I want to remove them and blank the cut outs in the roof.

I stumbled across this and it got me thinking

Yes I realize that, to fit them to the Clubman you had to remove the headlining and drill some fairly large holes in your roof, but at least they were covered up by the roof rails when they were fitted.

You will have remove your headlining I'm guessing, remove 8 bolts and then make good the 8 holes which is what I was getting at, a lot of work for what benefit?

I don't follow you. I just want to remove the bolts that hold the roof rails on then hide the holes. I don't get your drilling of holes in the roof.

If the bolts are held in with captive nuts, there will be no need to take the headliner out.

The downside is ill have no roof rails, the upside is ill have a lower looking car (in my head it will look lower anyway). And it will look different to other estates.

I think prykey is assuming the heads for the securing bolts are underneath, behind the head lining.

Can you see them on the top? If you can, you shouldn't need to remove the head lining

Unfortunately, i cant help with the blanking plugs, but please do post a few pictures if you go ahead with this. Im interested in how it will look.

You won't need to drill anything as you already have the holes, but you will have to cover them up and make sure they are watertight, the key is how are you proposing to do this as just putting blanking plates over them will look pants IMHO, however that's just my view.

Yes, the bolt heads are accessed from the top.

There are side plates on the rails which pop off to reveal the bolts.

If you want a different, lower looking car without roof rails, just take an angle grinder to the entire roof and get yourself an "open top" estate ;)

I think itd still look too high.

Maybe add some lowering springs or coilovers to that, and you might be half way there ;).
