pic request front shockers

Featured Replies

Has anyone got there front shocks off the car they can take a pic of please. Just want to see the bottom of it where it goes into the hub.

Basically I've fitted eibach lowering springs and the front is sat about 10mm higher than the rear so I want to get the strut sat another 10mm lower in the hub then drill through the locating spline for the bolt to go through then put a few spot welds on the strut just to stop it from moving just as a safety measure. I just want to make sure the diameter doesn't increase which stops it going down another further.

Sounds mad... Mine's got Eibachs and it sits level. Did you replace the topmounts at the same time. Did you replace all of the shocks too?

Had new top strut mounts not long ago and shockers aren't new but all the same milage and sat fine before. I can't see shocks making it sit high though surely the springs dictate the height?

Spring free length and poundage will control the ride height for a "normal" spring.

Next a question - Are you 120% certain that you actually have springs for a vRS? I'm not, because this sounds like the effect of fitting "normal diesel" lowering springs".

Finally, don't even think about doing your idea for moving the lower perches (you can't change the ride height by varying how far into the hub carrier the damper body is screwed, repeat screwed. Yes, that's right strut dampers are normally threaded and screwed into the carriers).

Yes deffo vrs springs. I googled the part numbers off the springs to double check before I fitted them.

I think we're talking about 2 different things as the shocks don't screw into the hubs they slide in and out and then have a pinch bolt that goes through the locating spline bit. By sitting this 10mm lower in the hub it will lower it as I've heard of people doing it on their coilovers, just want to check I can with standard shocks.

This is what I'm talking about setting the shocker 10mm further down

Found another pic to show what I mean. So shocker will move down into the hub by 10mm and then get bolted up. Seems they are the same diameter so shouldn't have a problem doing it

Something's not right. Rear shouldn't be lower. Front looks about right to be.

When fitting none vrs springs you get the nose down approach. Been there done that.

What part number are on the rear springs?

  • Author

Same part number as fronts which came up as for the vrs. I quite like the height of the rears just want the front to match. I was hoping they'd settle but not moved.

Have you got the rubber spring insulater fitted on the top of rear springs?

Pretty sure you will knacker your struts spot welding onto them, to get a proper spot weld with any strength the heat will be too much for the oil in your struts :)

  • Author

Yep put the rubber on the rear springs :) I'm pretty sure it won't need a spot weld on anyway as it shouldn't move when the hub is clamped but was going to just as a safety measure. It's the only thing I can think of doing to level it out

Just doing my cv gaiter.

Is this any help?

Mine is on standard springs & shocks afaik

Looks about right for -25mm eibachs on standard shocks. Mine with same set up

Does yours sit higher at the front? Hard to tell in that pic

Yeah it did mate

Another pic I found

Wonder why some sit like ours and others are level. It's really bugging me so deffo going to have a go at seating the shock abit lower in the hub

You will need to cut the flat piece of rear of strut that retaining bolt goes through to lower hub, pretty sure thats there as a secondary retaining fixture for strut, if bolt comes loose strut can not come out of hub due to bolt going through that plate.

If you haven't got that plate fitted and bolt comes loose your strut will be able to push down further through hub, or it could come out alltogether?

Kev that's the locating spline thing I was on about. Because I'm only going down 10mm there should be enough of that for me to drill through for the bolt to go through like the normal set up so in theory it should be how it is now but 10mm lower. This is why I wanted a pic to check there was enough room for me to do it. If I can't I wouldn't do it

it could be me... but it looks like it'll go in further?

That's definitely wrong, mine sits flush like snalers, this gives me the nose down stance on Eibachs/Bilsteins. The bore of your hub carrier is still shiny as well, it would be rusty by now if it came like that when new, someone's mucked about with those struts.

He's only just removed JOM's though, they might be longer hence why that bits clean and rust free.

Are the struts different between Fabia models? Wondering if spring seat heights could be different?

If the strut is right for the car it can't be right down in the hub and the retaining bolt can't be through the hole in the flat plate on rear of strut.

LOL, Just realised Kyles picture isn't even a Fabia hub!!!

Two retaining bolts into hub and the hub is threaded, not a nut and bolt.

I probably should of said I googled those pictures to show what I meant lol.

Cheers that's exactly what I wanted. If I move it down 10mm it shouldn't be close to the drive shaft (I know it's out on this pic) and there's enough of that locating spline/plate thing to drill for the bolt to pass through to secure it so it doesn't move
