Featured Replies

Took the plunge and finally ordered a brand spanking Superb estate. Counting the days until September 1st.

Cannot wait to join the family!

Is that it!?

Engine, spec, options, colour etc. etc!?

Aye that's it.

In a Elegance spec with sunset glass as the only option. Coming in candy white. 2.0tdi 140. Was seriously thinking about the 170 but thought the 140 had plenty.

Good work!

Nice one!. What are you moving from?

Moving from a 2009 Vauxhall Vectra 1.9CDTI Sri.

Had vauxhalls all my life but fancied a change. Really like the Vectra but I need more space and going with the superb I can now safely say I will have a lot more! quality will also be 10x better.! :-)

My father has an a Octavia on a '59' plate and he has been over the moon with it. He was the person who said go with Skoda as I was originally going to look at a new insignia but found myself pulling up to the Skoda dealers. Ha

Cannot wait for it to arrive. I had a test drive in the SE model as the dealer wanted me to try the 140 first and that was the only car he had in the 140 variant. I also had a drive in the 170 variant which was an elegance model. If I am honest, I thought the 140 had plenty of poke. Yes, the 170 had more but for the extra ££, it wasn't really worth it as it would no doubt be unusable power for me. However I thought the elegance was a lot better than the SE. The SE was very nice but the elegance was a step up in class. The leather interior was really nice. I've never had leather so looking forward to that and not mentioning the other extra kit that will come with it. Also I think the 18" wheels make the car look even better! I eventually decided to put the sunset glass on the back as I think it makes the car look even better.

Overall, I was very impressed with it. So smooth in power delivery compared to the Vectra and all the switch gear has a very nice touch to hand. AND not to mention the overall build quality and feel in comparison.

Managed to squeeze out a cracking price from the dealer so overall I am well chuffed!

I have a Couple of question if anybody would be so kind to answer. Forgot to look when in the showroom.

1) on the estate, does the boot still have the retractable parcel shelf as standard. I read in the brochure that this is an option but only for an automatic version when the boot lid is lifted. I am assuming there is a manual retractable 'pull out' shelf as standard?

2) is the CD unit a 6 changer in the elegance? Where by you can put 6 different CDs in the same slot at the front? I might be taking rubbish here but I am sure somebody mentioned it. I know Bluetooth will allow music from my phone but it would still be nice to return back to the old school CDs.

I am sure I'll have as the weeks unfold so stay tuned. Ha

I think the auto parcel shelf retracts half way with the electric boot release. As standard you'll get a manual one.

If you have Columbus you will only get one CD slot, but you get a 20gb hd (I I think is 20/ could be 30) or use an SD card, or use the MDI again this was/is an option on the Superb :)

I've not been in an Insignia, the facelifted one is quite handsome.

September feels like ages away, good colour combo the Trinity wheels on the elegance look great!

Yes you get a manual retractable shelf, and the cd/DVD slot is a single kind in the Columbus unit.

Cheers

Steve

When I bought my car, I also bought a 32mb memory card and recorded over 100 CDs onto it and there's still plenty of disc space for a lot more.  It's much easier than the old 6 CD changer, especially when we make out annual trip to Lithuania as you've got all your music to chose from rather than playing the same ones over and over on such a long journey.

Cheers!

I am happy happy with the manual shelf. Couldn't find anything in the brochure or on the web to say it even had a parcel shelf. Think it's the Columbus unit? Just the standard navigation unit that comes in the elegance model. So, will I be able to transfer the music from an Sd to the hard drive? Even better if that's the case. Never even thought of asking that question when ordering.

I have never had a white car. I have always said I would never buy a white car but I must say I am sold on white now. I think they look very nice. I think the extra tints on the back will make it even better!

I do like the look of the new insignias but it is no bigger than the vectra I have.

Excellent. Thanks guys!

Cd/ DVD..? Does this I could play a movie if ever needed on the front touch screen? Or are you just referring to a DVD as a storage medium?

It'll play a DVD, but the screen goes blank when you're moving; I think it's above 6kph.

There are other threads that discuss how to increase the speed where it cuts out to something like 250kph.

Well firstly I hope your new car is all you hope for and before anyone starts you have bought a good car but there are a couple of misconceptions you've posted there,

The Vectra and the Insignia are worlds apart and the 150 CDTi is like the VW 140PD engine in that it's a slam in the back engine when asked, both the CR and the 160 CDTi engines deliver the power in a smoother manner,

Now as someone whose had many VX a Skoda and a VW I can honestly say when it comes to material quality VX slaughters both the VAG brands, when it comes to fuel consumption the VAG engines win on the urban drive but not so much on the ex-urban, CDTi's seem to go all over the country on half a tank of juice, when you get your Superb expect a manual one to do around a mid 30 in town and 45-55 on a run, don't take any notice of official figures they are so wide of the mark these days

When it comes to getting rid of the VAG wins again but second hand buying the VX wins as you get the car cheap enough to absorb the extra the VAG will retain,

Dealer wise it's 50/50, neither excel enless you get the one in 100 that does pride itself,

I have an Insignia myself now and in comparison with my two VAG cars I have to say it's a nicer drive, better equipped and more comfortable, but that might just be a personal thing tbh,

Anyway I hope this car pleases you and it'll be interesting to see how you feel in 6 months time when you've had a good enough look at it to make an objective comparison, I suspect against the Vectra you'll be mighty pleased, against the Insignia I think the only benefit is the space inside the Superb offers, still it's good to have a change anyway, I did it with the original Superb and was very pleased, but against the B6 Passat, no thanks.

I like the Insignias actually especially the revised model but the superb has that bit of an edge over it. As Supurbia says the difference has narrowed a lot with the new Insignia however I think you'll have that more upmarket look with the Superb especially the combi. You won't feel like you're driving around in a rep mobile - no offence to sales reps :)

Sunset is a nice option BTW. Wasn't keen on it before but I love it now even on he hatch as it's not too dark.

Combi is excellent tbh,

My main gripe with Skoda and VW is they seem to have some idiot who thinks the dashboard isn't important and simply slings in a slab with 2 clocks in it, maybe just too minimalist for me tbh,

As far as having another I would/will eventually as I do think of the brand as good cars and way above Ford,Kia,Pug,Fiat etc but I also position VX this way as well,

They seem to shoot themselves over silly things, an Octy 3 is on my radar but again like the Rapid it's that bog basic looking inside and you only get a centre armrest which is also a half effort in the Elegance, £22k car no armrest, err own goal penny pinch, the Superb will have to wait until the MK3 arrives, what I've seen so far looks promising but then again so did the MK2 at the time and then they dumped something that the rear dept had run out of ideas how to finish nicely, twindoor is useless imo, nice idea but what function does it provide over a conventional hatch????

Anyway as the cost of a VAG is high if I get another I'll be needing the latest fuel efficient engines that the Octy3 has, the current Superb engines are good but not top of the tree when it comes to fuel, VX are hopeless in this dept, Ford are worse,

I could even be tempted to go to petrol next time if the deal is good.

With the fuel efficient petrol engines there should be some good options in the future. Not focusing on hybrid technology for the next gen Superb (well they seem to be suggesting that anyway) might a mistake from Skoda.

forget the sunset glass, and have it tinted to your liking at a later date - wish i had of! - the Sunset was way too light - dad's sunset on his L&K Yeti has been re-tinted to make it darker too.

I think the level of tinting is about right. It depends on your requirements. In my opinion if it was any darker it would start to look like a "hood-mobile". I had very dark glass on a Mazda and it looked a bit strange with the front window glass clear.

Thanks Superbia,

The Insignia is a nice car don't get me wrong, but I think 'personally' the Superb is better choice for me. I have had VXs all my life was always my intention to get another, but after sniffing around others, I decided to go with a Skoda. I have had my Vectra for a few years now and I really do like it. It drive well, well screwed together and I still think they look good, especially in the SRI models. I have had a look around a few Insignia's and even had one for a hire car recently and yes they are nice but they are not that big in the back in comparison. Rear legroom still remains poor. Yes the boot is a good size but anything other than an estate, the boot is very awkward to use when carrying a lot of stuff. The boot lip and entrance on the hatchback makes it very hard to load anything of great size. Which is not good for me and that's mainly the reason for deciding between the two.

Do you really think the MPG will be as low as that? I'm not convinced. You must have a heavy foot! ;-) currently getting 52mpg from the Vectra.

Price wise, once I finished haggling down the price with the dealer, I eventually got the superb £2k cheaper than the equivalent spec Insignia so cannot complain at that.

Anyway, looking forward to September now! :-)

I had an Insignia as a company car, an Elite manual with every bell and whistle and did 20k miles in six months but I struggled to get comfortable in the seat and never achieved the excellent mpg that I get in my Superb by nearly 10 mpg.

Cars are getting more expensive every timeI go into the dealers. Was in a VX dealership a few weeks back and a spotted a Corsa for £14,995!!! I nearly fell over with shock! What ever happened to the sub 10k motors?

Agree! I sat in the back of a superb in the show room with the sunset glass and it was more than enough for me. Coming from cars where I have never had tinted windows I wouldn't want to go any darker that's for sure.

The space is a Superb winner every time tbh, you can't beat a Superb for that and I know what you mean if rear loading is a priority as I have a hatch and it has a pair of wings built into it's shape that nearly knock your teeth out if you aren't careful plus the boot itself isn't what I'd call premium for space and nowhere near what the Vectra C estate offered,

Fuel wise I find in the city the VAG is better but on a run the VX shades it, neither will match their official figures and I believe most cars of this class in reality will max out at 55mpg, the dash sometimes says 70mpg etc but the reality is if you set it at the right time and drive daisy it will show that but once at the pump things change and you'll see a more accurate reading,

Someone mentioned the seats, I think this is a personal thing tbh, I've seen so many cars accused of creating back trouble for one and being a sofa for another, my Insignia imo is more comfy than the Superb and I like the up driving position rather than the go kart style of the VAG range where you sit real low, but like I said it's down to bum in the seat at the time tbh,

Incase they haven't told you the engine must use a specific oil, this is VW spec 507 low ash oil for this car, you should find yourself a spare litre as well as they sometimes use oil, it's not a fault but it does happen and unless you monitor it it catches you out with a low oil warning light, if it happens miles from anywhere you risk damaging the lump running low so until you know it doesn't use any keep some handy, the top up from low is 1/2 litre to a litre,

And finally look after the DPF, being on the motorway doesn't clean them, holding the revs at 2500 rpm does though so once a week give it 5 minutes in a lower gear, touch wood after a year I've not had any DPF warnings, when it does it itself the rpm raises and the bay gets really hot and stinks so don't park on grass or over anything flamable if you've just had a regen and let the regen complete, don't turn it off during one, hth.

The CR engine in the Superb's has no track record of excessive oil consumption

Never had to do any of this, and no DPF problems on CR superb in 3.5 years, same as many others
