Turbo coolant pump replacement?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just taken my car for a service...I've been losing coolant for a month or so now, (no overheating and I've been carrying coolant with me to keep it topped up) and I'd assumed that it was the water pump.

The mechanic who serviced my car said that the only error code it was throwing up was the coolant pump for the turbo and advised me to leave my car idling for a couple of minutes when I reach my destination.

Is it much of a job to get this swapped out? He also said the leak seemed to be coming from the right side front of the engine bay and assumed it was the pump itself that's leaking.

Learn something new every day. I never knew the turbo was water cooled, just thought it had an inter cooler rad .

I'm only going on what the mechanic said...I did a search and found a thread on there that mentioned an aux coolant pump throwing up an error, but there were no replies :-(

the turbo is water cooled and oil lubricated. the intercooler is for the charge of air produced by the turbo.

that said, I was wondering what that thing was for connected to the coolant lines and has power. makes a lot of sense!

also explains why the fan runs after you have turned off the car.

I think the watercooled turbo is only on the petrol versions, I've not heard of a watercooled turbo on a VAG diesel. The turbos on diesel engines don't get as hot as those on petrol engines so extra cooling of the turbo isn't usually necessary on a diesel.

AFAIK the reason the CR engine is fitted with an auxiliary electric coolant pump is to cool the engine if it is switched off mid way through a DPF regen.

As it turns out, I had the car re-scanned and it's showing no error codes now...So I guess that fault was just a momentary one.

The coolant has stopped leaking also, although I'm going to get the coolant system pressure tested this weekend hopefully.

sorry, should have looked to see OPs car was CR oil burner :)
