Scotchgard protection - is it visible?

Featured Replies

Just got the new car. The dealer told me that both the interior and paintwork has been treated with a protector. Don't think he specifically gave a name but it sounded similar to a Scotchgard type of job.

Is there any way of telling if this has been done, or should he be giving me any paperwork or warranty docs?

Did you pay for it yo be done?

if you didnt pay for it it wont have been done unless you agreed that it was included in the price you negotiated ??? I think you should get a certificate as proof of application and usually a sticker in the windscreen.

If you use the local car washes the RTF sprays that they apply will remove any protective coatings you have applied ................ so wash the car yourself with bog standard car shampoo to prevent this

With most paint protection treatements the dealer supplies a pack of car shampoo, sponge etc.

He just verbally told me it was a freeby - any idea how much this would cost? He def said it covered paintwork and interior.

I can't see any stickers on the car at all and didn't get any paperwork

Of course - he may have been spoofing....

The interior can easily be checked by pouring a small amount of water on the seats and seeing if it forms beads on top of the fabric rather than soaking in. Assuming you haven't got the full leather that is.

Had mine treated with GardX, inside and out. Price was about £150, but starting price was about £299. Seems to be "think of a number" as far as the dealers are concerned. If you're happy to pay the asking price, they'll let you, but they'll take much less if pushed just to sell it. Not sure if I got a good deal or not in the end. Even so, still don't know whether it's worth it or whether it will be any good long-term, but it does come with a guarantee, a sticker inside the front windscreen and a Premium kit for refreshing it after washing. Only used it once, so far, but I have to say it did make a difference, with the rain just running off.

It will bead and refuse to soak in water

Its very easy to apply yourself too

I am collecting my car tomorrow. My dealer has applied similar thing called Autoglym life shine. There are lots of different ones . According to my dealer this product Autoglym it protects from UV, Rain water and it also protects from harmful chemicals to react with paint work etc and apparently when you wash your car it gives a showroom Finnish. If they have sprayed on you interior that will protect it from water or any kind of spillage on you upholstery.

One thing to bear in mind - IF it is Autoglym (Lifeshine) that the car has been treated with you should have received about 6 pages of the legal stuff. The treatment is guaranteed (from memory) for 10 years so this needs to be registered with Autoglym, whether it's a freebie or not there's no point of having it applied if it only looks shiny for 10 minutes and there's bu66er all guarantee with it  :)

Hope that helps.

I'm sure I read the Autoglym guarantee is only valid if you ONLY ever use Autoglym products on it for it's entire life, if you use another product then it's invalidated...

Not too sure on that one. It's a possible clause that could be put in to the T's and C's but I'll be honest that I do not know the answer to that, BUT.......... how would they ever know? Unless they looked in the boot of the car upon a claim and there was a bag of Autoglym goodies never opened, date stamped then it's pretty much a guessing game.

The interior is the easy one to get around, I remember when they sent one of their blokes to us for a 'refresher' course, the lads mentioned that there was some light type thingy that reacted with the interior treatment and it showed where had been treated and not.

Outside though, impossible to tell I guess

Just poured a few beads of water on the back seat and they just soaked immediately into the fabric.

If he swears blind it was applied then what can I do?

Swear blind back!

If there's no paperwork, it's worth the paper it's written on..

Then there is no protection applied at all......... they are lying to you!!

From past experience, these 'professional' paint/interior protection systems always come with paperwork (be it a general leaflet saying how wonderful they are, a certificate or a registration card) and a sticker in the window.

If you ain't got any of them, then it ain't been done with a 'professional' system.

Gtechniq I1 costs less than £20 and you can treat all interior fabrics and carpets etc in less than 30 minutes.

Even if you have no OCD I can't see that paying a dealer a penny to do it can be vfm.
