DIY boost leak test

Featured Replies

Should plug in instead of the MAF pipe if you're testing the whole inlet system. Seems the most convenient point to try, unless you want to be under the car plugging it into the compressor outlet.

Have you got any smoke pellets?

not getting under the car to much hassle when you don't have a lift. What are smoke pellets?

Used to detect gas leaks usually... Never used them myself but have heard mentioned of them used for boost leak tests. The phrase "burns for xxx minutes/seconds" makes me think you wouldn't simply bung it into a plastic tube and light it!

Lol good point ! Think I'll just give it a go using air, I'll be able to hear one if theirs one there I would think anyways

Looking at that link I would remove the breather pipe from tip and blank it off before pressurising the inlet, as alot of your pressure is going to go into the engine through the breather pipe rather than through your boost pipes etc.

Suppose you would have engine running and let it suck the smoke into the inlet with the inlet pipe removed from maf?

the smoke may not want to burn and if you slip you will suck the pellet in maybe ??

Was thinking more along the lines of several layers of foil under it. Try on any scrap plastic first....

Easier/safer searching for boost leaks without the engine running. These engines shouldn't have valve overlap to worry about, just piston seal... So pump up with a compressor. Don't go too high with the pressure. 25 PSI should do it. That's around 1.66 bar.

I usually spray fairy liquid mix around the joints and then you can normally see where the leak is when you rev it and create boost as it will bubble up, like checking for a puncture. May be worth a shot if you don't fancy trying your way first
