Poorly VRS

Featured Replies

Well im sad to say my VRS got towed away today by Skoda Assist.

Misfire on cylinder 3 and upon compression test there was no compression at all on Cylinder 3 (others spot on) and there is also an issue with the dsg something to do with clutches exceeding tolerances limit that was the error code.

Not a happy bunny however the dealership its gone to is good so with any luck it should get sorted properly.

Any ideas what the fix on this, is it engine out job (or new engine) and new clutch pack?

New engine by the sounds of it :-( No compression on a cylinder is major! Could be a burnt out valve or something.

How was you engine running before? Oil use?

Well it had an issue a few weeks ago which skoda assist came out replaced a coil pack on cylinder 1 then it went to main dealer for boost leak check and they loaded some new software on the dsg box as that can up with an error, but when i got the car back skoda assured me the car is fine, but as the dsg box is in a learning mode it might behave a little different until it adapts my driving. In my opinion it didnt seem its normal self but i could really put my finger on it so i assumed the dsg was doing its learning thing. As for oil consumpton its or it was a good one, no issues there.

I agree with the DSG, mine hasn't been the same since!

Your car still under Warranty? It might need a short engine change, so cylinder head and valves.

Yeah its still under warrenty. I just hope if its a new engine or short engine it doesnt turn in an oil burning pup.

I tell you what though the response and effort from skoda assist has really impressed me.

re 'Short Units'.

Part of 'Alistair Stewart Brand Director Skoda UK's' Team',

told another member, '& that is available in writing'.

"There are no Short Units used."

The New Engines are Refurbished ones from the German Factory and there was a stick of them in the UK.

So what do you reckon will they do pull my engine apart and fix it or put a refurbished engine in?

They can check the engine and see,

but do not let them rebuild it.  & any suggestion of that, is for you to tell them, 'get stuffed'.

They can see the fault once the head is off.

It will be a new engine i would imagine.

Old one out new one in,  but possibly a new Gearbox at the same time.

Your Dealer is up to the job i hope,

Their past performance has not been great has it?

4,000 Euro for the Engine.

I hope so too fingers crossed but i do have a lot of faith in people so im confident they will do a good job.......they have a new service manager and he seems alright.

Anyway I ll speak to them next week to find out what the way forwad, i dont want a rebuild as ive lost confidence in its current engine and box i want a proper fix coz i plan on keeping the car for a number of years. I may need to speak to skoda uk if its gonna be a rebuild, hopefully not though.

If it is a new engine will it be a recon cave or cthe? Then its a lottery will it be an oil burner? Plus is it a new setup like new chargers etc or all my old stuff bolted on?

is it me or is there a number of threads now where coil packs are replaced (presumably plugs not pulled out and visually checked as computer says coil pack??)

then a short time later a major issue with the engine, usually compression

could a number of these coils packs be the symptom of the plug failing and dropping a chunk of electrode into the bore and screwing the engine?

just a thought as I don't believe in coincidences with the number of cases I think there are listed on here??

The Problem was the 1.4 TSI CAVE Engine, Components and Engine Management.

Misfires from a Spark Plug in Cylinder 3, and the plug, Coil & Valves burning out.

& then the other issues.

All well known by VW that Built the Engines & Skoda that fitted the 1,800 sold in the UK between 2010-12

& in the around 3,000, 3 Sister cars, Seat Ibiza Cupra. Polo Gti, Audi A1 185, 2009-2012

(Over 1,000 CTHE vRS have been Sold Since, with the Engines which were revised & the Engine Management because

SKODA-VW knew the faults with CAVE engines.)

It was about 20 % of them failing, but that was 12 months ago.

Lots have failed since then, some having more than 1 engine fitted.

So Skoda/VW know what is wrong,

Even if for some Reason Skoda Technicians seem not to.

& 'SKODA UK CUSTOMER SERVICES EMPLOYEES' SAY THAT IT IS OVERBLOWN ONLINE,

& DONT LISTEN TO WHAT YOU ARE TOLD ON BRISKODA FORUM.

No Rebuilds or Short Units should be getting done under the Manufacturers Warranty..

That was what they did 2011-12,  But the Engines Changed in 2012 to CTHE,

THe Replacement engine used has some Parts that are the same as used in the CTHE Engines.

Get onto Skoda UK & have your Case all Logged with them.

No need for a Dealership to Delay anything.

Do i just give skoda uk a ring or send them an email?

  • Author

At least its reassuring it will be a cthe engine.....well with anyluck

  • Author

Cheers George thanks again for you help i compose an email and once ive sent it i ll give them a bell. Whats there email address on there web site you basically add your info and email address and send an enquiry and it looks like they will either ring you back or email you. Is thay the case to start the ball rolling?

From reading these threads,

i really think you might need Skoda to arrange for your car to be taken to some Competent Technicians.

If your car was all OK before the Spark Plugs were changed for you it is a crying shame.

After the plug issue back in dec which they eventually sorted im confident my local dealership will pull though this time. Its under new service management so i would assume there will be more than likely different technicians working on my car this time.

If the dealership isnt playing ball i ll have no option but to get skoda uk heavily involved. But i m assuming it wont come to that.

All i want is my car back running sweet with a proper engine replacement repair and whatever else is required for the gearbox, obviously the software update on it didnt fix it. One would assume the clutch packs/mechatronics units will need replacing, but hey ho im not a mechanic just an aircraft engineer..... But i wont be fobed off.

Coil pack "failure" may register due to plug being severely coked and spark being difficult to properly form - much more resistance due to coking. But the coil in not a problem, bad combustion is. Carbon deposits form aroind exhaust valve leading to overheating, valve burnt out. Or plug overheats and tip breaks away destroying piston/rings/valves. With plug overheating detonarion might occure as well which leads ECU to enrich to mixture to prevent it leading to even worse combustion, more ubnurnt deposits and ultimate very fast failure. ECU is not able to detect deposits....

As for the DSG there are reports of "clunking noises" being heard from the box. Recently I was paying attention to mine and from what I've been hearing would indicate clutch packs problem of some sort. This would go with downshifts from 3rd t 2nd in very slow trafic being violently jerky - happened to me all 3 times in 20k miles mind you. Still should not be happening at all. Otherwise no prpblems with the box really.

When mine suffered a burnt valve (cylinder 2), it also had no compression.  "Diagnostics" by the recovery garage said I needed a new coil pack...  I got a full crate engine, turbo and cat (had 22k on the clock), the reasoning being they weren't sure what had happened to the bits of valve and what consequential damage could have been done.

Mine wasn't a bad oil burner by twincharger standards (1 litre/10k); replacement was good though (about 1l/20k)

  • Author

Mines not been looked at as of yet. Mine was a good engine so i hope it gets exchanged for another good engine ideally a cthe as ive lost faith in the caves. Which did you end up with?

You do not get a cthe engine and ecu unless that is what it had at manufacture. It is an enhanced cave that is supplied.

  • Author

Well if thats the case at least its a bit better than my current one. Are these engines actually new zero miles or are they recon oil burner/repair engines.

For instance i would assume my current engine will go back to skoda main factory have what ever done and end up in someelses car in the future. Is that the case?

They are refurbished in a vw factory in Germany. The same factory that refurbished dsg's

  • Author

So good as new then. What do you reckon with the dsg box and refurb box or will then replace the gubbins such as clutch packs/mechatronics unit (if thats it right name).
