Horn, indicators and wipers have stopped all at once

Featured Replies

Hi all, I bought a Skoda about 6 months ago off my dad and I must say I was dreading it :dull: . But since owning it I absolutely love it, its got to be the best motor I have driven :D . the problem I have got is that yesterday I went to go to work and my indicators, wipers and horn had all stopped working. After lots of reading and ringing people I have narrowed it down to the control unit under the steering wheel, i've took all the plastics off and located it but I cant seem to remove the bloody thing. Also if anybody knows roughly how much this will cost me to get fixed it would be great as I only paid £500 for the car so don't want to go too mad with sorting it as its nearly on 400,000 miles so I don't think there is that much life left in her !!

( I checked fuses and thought about relays, but was told the chance of 2 relays going at the same time is very slim)

If anyone could help me out with this or maybe throw some other ideas as to what it could be it would be massively appreciated!!.

its an Octavia estate 56 reg.

many thanks,

You'll need to remove the screw at the front of the controller and push a small Allen key (or any thin stuff item) into the hole underneath it.

This releases one catch.

The second catch is at the back and releasable from the right hand side with a longer thin object as above.

Look at the picture to see how this lines up with externally visible items.

If you need a new controller I have two available which may be suitable for you depending upon what controller you have fitted (slip ring type really) and whether you have MFSW and/or Maxidot or not.

PM me if you need advice.

I discovered that the Ross Tech instructions of work but there is a misleading but in the middle about keeping the sensor 'on' while doing the second half.

If you are near Hereford I can help out as I've just changed mine and have VCDS.

A Very warm welcome to Briskoda!

Certainly sounds like its the steering column controller that has failed to me, as everything you have said is plugged into that. Get a VCDS scan done to see what fault codes come up.

To remove, remove airbag and steering wheel, and lower the bottom shrouding. You'll see a TINY torx screw which is immediately behind the steering wheel which holds the controller in place. Remove this. There are two large plastic tangs that now hold the controller into the column. One is accessed by a screwdriver just the the left of the ignition switch, pushing towards the inside of the car, the other is at the rear of the unit which is released by pushing towards the seats, rather than the dashboard.

Here is a picture of the controller which should show you where the mounts are:

You'll then need to recalibrate the steering as described here in Ross Tech's website. You can't do this without VCDS,

Hope this helps

Hi all sorry for the seriously late reply!! Just an update for you lot. The day after my last post i went to start the skoda and the battery had died over night, i jumped it and the control unit under the steering wheel had fixed its self. my horn, wipers and indicators were working again and have been fine since!! just thought id share this with you so if anyone else gets this problem tell them to disconnect the battery over night. You never know it might work!!

I'd swear these cars are powered by Windows OS...

Glad it's resolved though.
