Updating Columbus Maps

Featured Replies

Has anyone actually updated the maps DB on a Skoda Columbus or had it done by a dealer?

If the former, how difficlut was it?

If the latter how did you get the dealer to step up to this?

In terms of knowledge about this subject, the dealers seem to be usless and Skoda UK as bad.

Google "RNS 510 v10 maps".

That's all I'm saying ;)

It is the confusion on the www that led me to ask the question here.

Ah I see.

Basically the maps are the same as the VW ones.

V10 (8048 western europe) is the latest version.

You can download, burn to a dual layer DVD and stick the disc in and it copies them over.

You may just need to check which firmware version your columbus has by pressing and holding the setup button and going to version information.

I thought that others may like to share my experiences so far.

Dealer utterly useless.  For example when I suggested updating the mapping DB via the SD card slot, claimed that our car did not have one!

Skoda UK lied to me on the phone.  Claimed that the mapping company would only update the maps for a charge of £200 or more.  BTW, he also suggested that should I DIY it and it go wrong, I'd get a bill for two grand to fix it!  (it sounded a lot like a threat to me.)  His final advice was not to bother.  Which I find breathtaking advice on car that cost what a Superb does.

However Skoda's corporate site gives instructions on how to download and update the map DB.

So I have downloaded the map DB (it is both enormous and FREE) and extracted it a 32GB SD card.  However I cannot get at the seqeunce "Menu - Settings - System Information - Update Software".

So back to the question has anyone ever done this successfully or had a dealer do it?

The website you have found is for the new MK3 Octavia.

The Columbus in your car can only be updated by a DVD.

What he was saying is if it goes wrong they won't cover the warranty.

The price he quoted is right. They are expensive.

As I posted before you will have to download the .iso file and burn to a dual layer DVD to do the update.

PM me if you need more details.

Why did Skoda not know all this?

And thank you.

Probably because it's not strictly above board.

My point is Phil that finding out this stuff, like how to update the maps - even legitimately, is like pulling teeth.  Frankly Skoda support for this is useless.  You have no idea how long it took me to get to where I was before posting here.

I really should not be surprised though, I used to be in this business (embedded software) and I remember vividly that about fifteen years ago VW had to pull a car announcement for six months because "the software isn't ready",  At the time the car companies and their Tier Ones used to drive me to distraction with their lack of knowledge and skills on software but I thought that they would grow into it - it appears not!

I had a similar experience trying to get Columbus firmware updated by my dealer. You'd think I'd asked them to fit a flux capacitor. :wall:
