Timing belt change

Featured Replies

I was told today by my local dealer that the Timing belt life had been extended to 5 years or 90000 miles. Came just in time for me! I believe that not all varients are covered.

Is that for a particular model or age of model or just something that the dealers have made up themselves?? That's obviously country specific again, there are so many variations on that between the UK, Ireland and other countries most of which have been argued at length on this forum with different permutations between mileage limits, time limits etc.......I guess the debate continues :) :)

I've got a 170tdi, I was told by a Skoda dealer 120k or 4 years, I thought 120k was high but my car was coming upto 4 years so by what Skoda was saying it needed doing, I rang a local Lion Garage who are a VAG only specialist and they said 80k, I questioned why no year limit they told me that there are no year limits in Europe so they don't quote one here as it just another way of making money out of the British motorist! They were also hell of alot cheaper, got the timing belt, tensioners and rollers, water pump and as mines a 4x4 the Haldex oil all done for less than Skoda quoted for just the timing belt! and that was using all VAG parts!

Also have a look in the front of the your service book, it gives a list of what needs doing at what service intervals in kilometres, At 4 years in addition to other stuff mine says 180 000km for a toothed timing belt on a CR engine or 150 000km on a PD engine!

Skoda UK have extended the cambelt interval from 4 years to 5 years on cars manufactured from 2011.

Anything built before this is still 4 years.

I have a late 2010 model 170 4x4 and their computer says mine is 5 years

What's the mileage requirement now?

Dealer I spoke to when collecting car from it's 2nd variable service, said no time limit, only 160,000km,  and he was supposed to have checked this, with Skoda Ireland.

I presume they meant 180K kms which is what Skoda Ireland confirmed when I checked recently.  Its hilarious that there are so many different answers to this question depending on who you ask!

My mondeo is 125 k so I'm guessing it'll be about the same?

That's classed as a MY2011.

As stated the time interval is blanket across all Skoda models.

Pre-2011 = 4 years.

2011 onwards = 5 years.

The mileage limit varies by engine and year so the only definitive answer is to refer to your owners manual / service book or ring Skoda UK.

Unfortunately your dealer is wrong. Check the service book in the glove box or ring Skoda Ireland with your VIN for an accurate answer.
