Suspension change

Featured Replies

I am changing the suspension on the MKI Superb (2006 Edition 100) for a full set of Bilstein B12’s (so struts / rear shockers and Eibach springs) now I assume they do not come with new top mounts, so at 85K miles and 8 years old are these likely to be shot?

My gut feeling is to change them anyway, but for those that have replaced their suspension what were your top mounts like when you removed them (mileage and age when they were changed would be good also), but if there is going to nothing wrong with the OE ones then it seems a bit pointless especially as you cannot guarantee the replacements will be as good a quality as OE ones.

Your thoughts.

It will be worth changing after 8 years as they do take quite a bit of abuse and it also saves on labour costs while the shocks and springs are off the car and no need to worry about them for another 100k.

Mine looked ok at 140k  for my skoda octavia mk2 apart from a bit of corrosion but didn't want to take the risk of them failing a few months later. Also your upgraded suspension will put extra strain on the old  mounts due to higher cornering speeds so its worth put a fresh pair of mounts and bearings on.

Genuine skoda/VW will be the best but can't fault SKF ones I got on my octavia.

Thanks that was my thinking also.

Did your SKF (front) ones come as a pair or singularly? ECP say “quantity per axle !” .... so that would be a pair then??

The rears are listed separately

yes the front ones come as a pair for a mounting kit hence 1 set per axle.

I didn't bother with the rear ones though as the rear ones are metal and don't take as much punishment as the front ones, although it will be worth getting some new mount bolts as they tend to get quite rusty with them being exposed to the elements.

Well I bought the new top mounts just in case... but even at 84K miles old the old OE ones were in perfect condition.
