Fitting Sharan Springs to rear calipers - over noise dampers?

Recommended Posts

Hello Guys,

Been having issues recently with the handbrake on my vRS, its been tightened twice in about three months now by the garage. All seems fine with it and then it suddenly goes slack again and there is play in the lever before the first "click". I've had a look today and with the handbrake on both cables seem to be pulled tight, right the way up to the rubber stops.

I've seen comments that this could be possible be due or the calliper seizing or similar and it has been suggested that fitting the calliper springs from the Sharan might help the issue and have ordered some form the bay.

I previously fitted the noise damper arms to the rear callipers as my car suffered from badly the "moo's". When iv had a look today i notice that the noise dampening pads/discs seem to cover the holes where i would inset the Sharan spring ends. It looks like the dampening disc/pad is just held in place with a hex-head screw. I'm presuming i can just uncrew, remove, fit the spring and then screw back on?

Cheers

Just been out and had another look, when releasing handbrake the nearside cable/arm moves freely and by a good few millimetres. The offside however barely moves at all and moves very slowly like the arm is hummed up or something

I had this on my VRS. The lever on the caliper had partially seized and wouldn't return fully when I let off the handbrake. I pushed lever back manually and fitted the helper springs from Audi calipers but that only masked the problem. After about a month the lever had made it's way back down and butted up against the metal block and it stopped working again.

I replaced the caliper with a new one off EBay send it's been perfect ever since. Only cost about £65 and was made by TRW, you can even see where the Audi badge would be if it had been destined for the dealer network!

I would defo replace cables first as these can cause dragging calipers. The set up is poor on these cars as it is

I have fitted both dampers and the rear sharan springs. It is true the holes in the brackets are covered up but i improvised and just pulled the sharan spring over the bracket and in between the damper and it works ok. Not had moo'ing for a while now.

here is the damper fitted

and with damper and sharan spring

Your comments 're: the springs, do you mean you can hook the spring around the back of the noise dampers and then hook it into the slot in the metal plate or do you just pull it over the damper and then hook the spring onto the back edge of the metal plate?

Looked at the other wheel and that also seems to have the problem with the arm being pulled down low, hoping its cables and not calipers :o

I mean first hook the spring into the upper bracket slot( you have to bend the spring straight piece with pliers to get it to locate in the hole properly)

Then loop the other part of spring over the damper and behind it to sit on top of damper and on the damper bracket. No way will you be able to locate in the upper bracket hole if you don't do that first.

If you have not replaced cables then i bet that is your problem . The cables need no resistance to be able to return back the rear caliper end stops. Any slight restriction and you will get a dragging caliper guaranteed.

The new cables have much thicker sleeves that attempts to stop any inner cable crushing from either idiot garages jacking car up on them or fatigue in cables.

Took it down to VW Specialists near work today, diagnosed a seized OSR Caliper :(

250 Sheets later I have a new caliper (which needs painting) and two new brake pads on at the rear (they changed the gearbox oil as well I must add).

Handbrake seems sorted at least, need arms like Thor to put the bugger up to four clicks now. Might leave the springs off for time being until they all bed in as heard the springs make handbrake even harder to apply?

Next job, paint that caliper, which will be a new one on me - I do love this DIY lark!

Not right happy with the garage at the moment. Just been and had a look under the car and where the new caliper had been fitted they have fitted it with a spring. Annoying given I have the pair on my kitchen table I got off eBay last week. Even more annoying, they've removed the damper on that side and replaced it with a new, undampened piece!

So, nearside is currently noisr dampened with no spring, off side has no noise dampers but a spring. I shall be fizzing if the mooing returns

Just an update for this, re contacted garage who still had the arm with the noise dampener on it sat on the workbench. Mechanic knew what it was as apparently they used to fit them as a modification, but the new caliper came with a helper spring and he couldn't see how to fit it onto the dampened arm, so just took it off.

In terms of getting the spring on over the dampers, the actual dampener/bush/weight is held on with a hex head screw, used a ratchet handle to get this off (a ratchet driver wouldn't work as it is realy well screwed in and couldnt get enough torque onto it) and then with some tension already applied to the spring with some mole grips just installed the spring as per normal, using a piece of gardening wire looped through the hook to pull it into place. I did have to straighten out both ends of the spring ever so slightly with a pair of pliers to get them to seat properly into the holes. Then just reattached the dampener/bush/weight.

Job done! Cheers for the help guys!
