Name that sound! Horrible noise coming from the engine.

Skoda Fabia VRS - Strange noise: http://youtu.be/ishORZCwFmY

Started this morning. I got into car and drove off and heard this coming from the engine. When I open up the bonnet I noticed that the noise was from the front but could locate it exactly. As shown in the vid the noise isn't constant but comes and goes.

After about 30 seconds or so the noise stopped, however, if I revved the engine a bit the noise returned.

However, once I drove down the road for about 1/2 mile the noise went away completely.

Anyone ever experienced this kind of thing.

Thanks.

BTW, sorry about the shortness of the video, I accidentally press stop on the phone without realising it. But at least it captures the noise.

Could be the alternator clutch.

Does your air conditioning work or does the noise change if you switch it on/off?

What about turning everything electrical on does the sound stop?

The air con works OK and had a new compressor fitted last year. The sound did seem to be coming from the top rather than down by the air con compressor.

If its the alternator clutch is it something that needs fixing immediately or will the alternator be OK for the time being?

remove the aux belt and see if noise is still there, then its just process of elimination to see what it is

If it is the alternator then they can go big time eventually and wreck the aux belt and sometimes even the cambelt.

Do the suggestion above to remove the aux belt and see if the noise goes.

Also while it's off have a wiggle and spin of the alternator pulley.
