engine not starting

Featured Replies

I had a really strange experience today, when I pressed the start button and depressed the barake padal(DSG) the ignition switched on but the engine would not start, no sound no warning light showing there was anything wrong. I turned the ignition off and tried again but no good, I tried this several times but would not start and each time I tried, the brake pedal became stiffer. After approx.1 hour I tried again and the engine started !!.

Has anyone experienced this? If so what is the possible cause, most interested to hear your views.

Well, the brake pedal hardening is just the vacumn reservoir for the servo getting depleted. You can reproduce that by pimping the pedal with the engine off.

The not startign is trickier, but makes me think of an intermittant fault with the anti-theft immobilisor or with the ignition inhibitor.

Or the DSG wasn't in P or N properly.

Thanks "Ken O Neill", is this detectable with vcds or does it require dealer to investigate?

Thanks Superbia, the dsg was in "P"

Wrong order.  Press the brake pedal then press the start button (unless the cars with stop/start systems work differently to mine).

Thanks "wokwon", just the order in which I wrote the description, as you point out, this is the only way I start the engine. However on this occasion it did not start!

Na I didn't mean that as such, sometimes although the lever looks in position it's just enough out to make the car think it's in F or R rather than where it actually is, hth.
