4x4 Conversion

Featured Replies

I'm wanting to get back into a mk1 Octavia as I miss mine something terrible and had a idea but I cant seem to find anyone that has done it yet!

Say I had an S3 that had been damaged but all running gear perfect! Would it be possible to do a like for like swap into a 4x4 Octavia?

I understand that they are pretty much the same chassis and that it should be a straight forward enough swap.

But I love the idea of a 4x4 estate with S3 potential!

Be a lot easier to just drop the S3 engine, gearbox & ECU etc in. S3 interior fits into mk1 Octy too.

Thats what I'm talking about doing. taking everything from the S3 (Engine, Gearbox, ECU, Shafts, wishbones, rack, etc etc) Was wondering is it as straight forward as I'm thinking as both are 1.8t.

Should all drop straight in. If you put the dash in too you shouldn't have to do much recoding if any.

Everything should just bolt up and away you go, exhaust may need some fetling i imagine octavia exhaust is longer.

rear end will not be a bolt on job. you will need to cut the floors out and swap them, also, where is the prop shaft going to run?

I think he plans on using a 4x4 octavia not a normal one

Correct.

not an exact bolt-off bolt-on conversion

to use the gearbox, a custom prop is needed made from front section of the S3 prop and rear of the octy prop

steering rack would require alot of effort to tranfer - mated to a different version of the abs system

you could transfer the entire abs system and all its sensors - don't its ever been done though so don't you'll find a guide

is possible to build a hybrid octy/lcr abs system to get the rack to work, is a rough guide for that

ah

slightly less work then!

I've just bought an ary 6sp S3 box for my 4x4 octy,is that the same script for the prop shaft?

I'm gonna keep the rack std though! ;-)

Yep

Makes the prop the right length

Octavia has a longer wheelbase

I've pondered the hybrid abs - but am quite happy with normal rack and its weighting

What's the difference between the 2 engines other than power output? Both 1.8 turbos right?

Couldn't you just tune the engine on the Octy?

S3 has bigger turbo, twin intercoolers, bigger injectors, etc etc lol

So apart from the bolt on bits they're the same unit. Just pinch the turbo and injectors from the s3. I'm guessing you'd then fit a front mount intercooler instead

I say the full engine swap would just be easier. With the inlet manifold being on the correct side to allow me to just use the twincooler but a fmic would probably be a better option!

Sorry forgot to mention the stronger internals as well

Ah fair enough. Should be easier to do the full swap. Can you use the s3 clocks or will you re-code the Octavia ones?

  • Author

The clocks wouldnt fit but I don't think I'd need to replace them as both are 1.8t petrol.

Not any stronger In reality

Wonder if the whole dash would fit???

Depends on what you are doing with the immobiliser.

  • Author

The immob is in the clocks is it not? Which means i wouldn't have to change anything in that area if I didn't change them no? The s3 dash wouldnt line up with the door cards and I'm not a big fan of the s3 dash anyway!

I'm really surprised this hasn't been done before!

You'd need to code the clocks to the s3 ecu though surely?
