humming noise at 70mph +

Featured Replies

Hey guys. Hope someone can help as it's driving me mental (ba dum tis)

When I get to 70 (or sometimes before depending on wind speeds) there is a constant loud humming from the passenger side. I tired dipping the clutch and it still happens

The weirdest thing is it goes away instantly of any window is opened more than about a cm.

Anyone have any ideas? Did do a search but no one's posted the same fault really.

Cheers

Could possibly be a door seal?

Try spraying silicone over them to see if that makes a better seal and therefore less prone to wind howl.

I've just had something similar, at first thought it was tyres as the rear are badly saw toothed. had all 4 corners replaced with Goodyear eagle f2 asymmetrical  and although a lot quiet the hum was more noticeable.

ended up being a rear wheel bearing.

Is your car still under warranty?

The door seal sounds like a good solution. It's 2010 so about a year put of Warrenty unfortunately. I'll have a butchers tonight and see if the seals are to blame.

TPI 2024347/1 dated 15-Sep-2010 relates to Wind noise from front door when driving at a speed of about 100 km/h.

The problem is wind noise (humming) coming from the front vehicle part when driving at a speed of about 100-130 km/h.

It is a noise similar to that one occurring when the vehicle drives onto the white line (with roughened surface) on the edge of the road.

This wind noise is caused by vibrations of the dust sealing in the upper area of the A-pillar.

(The picture in the TPI showing the area where the wind noise originates highlights the seal from about 2" below the top of the black wing mirror trim on the door and extending a further 4" or so up the A- pillar).

The workshop fix is to correct the matching of the front door in the upper hinge (according to the Workshop Manual).

Loosen the hinge, pull the door towards the body and fasten the hinge in the new position.

This doesn't sound like a DIY fix!
