Rust ?

Featured Replies

Does new 2013 skoda rust ? octavia, yeti ? you can spot rust really soon on some new cars. How about skoda ?

Where are you spotting rust on some new cars,

is it ,Brake Discs, Calipers,  Exhausts, Brackets, suspension parts,  Rear Drum Brakes where fitted  etc. ?

That happens still on V W Group Cars,  Skoda , VW. Seat , Audi, even on the most expensive of them.

and on vehicles from many manufacturers.

You should not be finding rust where there is treated & painted Body Work, or Wheels or other Main Components that are Powder Coated etc.

3 Year Paint Warranty & 12 Year Body Protection Warranty with Skoda,

but you need your Body Inspection done at Service Times, to identify any damage.

Proper repairs should be done where damage as occurred and paint, lacquer or other protective coatings are damaged & bare metal exposed.

PS

I read your other Post where you said Audis do not rust.

Maybe go walk around a Forecourt at a Audi Dealer and look at New & Nearly new,

look in the wheel spokes of a 'S-Line' and see how your new car might also have cosmetic corrosion within a few weeks of use.

then look just like the ones on the VW Dealers Forecourt, Skoda or Seat Dealers Compounds.

But it is the same at Hyundai/Kia, BMW, etc etc.

Sometimes Fords look built with better components or Paint, and Mercedes, Honda etc.

Looking at used cars & even Demonstrators that have sat a few weeks is a good way to know how your new car might look.

Some issues on older cars 2007-2009 but you really shouldn't see anything on the bodywork on a car a year old unless there is a defect.

Its just my own experience with old cars, i had old audi its 87 or so  year model and it looks still good :) and i had couple old japanese cars and they are rell rust buckets. now i have vw passat and 2006 and i found rust on the body. I don't have experience with newer cars.

I was a car painter, even now with Water based paints there should be no Body Corrosion or underbody rust or behind plastic protection panels,

but there always will be some modelsfrom some manufacturers have snagging problems only found after a few years have passed..

Some Octavias MK3 have had Corrosion show at Bonded/Sealer covered Joints (when not sealed properly before painting) at the rear of the roof.

Cars these days are more likely to reach end of life because of Electrical Failure & Computer says 'no', i believe.

That can be cars from any manufacturers not only French cars

Near 12 Year old Passat,

original Paint, Rust Free car, once you got passed the Impeller made of Chocolate you had a car that lasts,

well some do,  The Door locks give up, and the Window Regulators etc.

But then, if everything in life was a Reliable as VW said they were, we would only ever buy one and keep it for ever.

true :( hey can you tell me is that 1.2 engine is good enough for full loaded skoda octavia or yeti ? for longer trips ?

Specific question like that you might get a better response to in the Octavia or Yeti forums.

However, I suspect the 1.2 would cope fine as long as you didn't expect it to break any land speed or economy records.

They don't rust in the UK, at least not yet. Here in Sweden, on the other hand, they rust like hell.

I recently looked at a 2011 Suberb and I could put two fingers through the spare wheel well. It had done roughly 50k miles.

Whaaat ? !

Sweden uses the most road salt in the world by far. Our cars are rotting like you wouldn't believe. My car's boot was repaired professionally in december 2009. I have now a hole the size of a cigarette packet in the exact same place.

Had three small paint blisters repaired on our last Yeti on both offside doors. Skoda fixed it under goodwill as they claimed the problem was not covered by the warranty, as they were stone chips but I have my doubts.

Noticed the same issue on my lads 2009 (59) Fabia the other day but on the tailgate in the number plate recess, while replacing the rotten screws holding the plate on. However one of these was behind the plate and not in an area where the plate may have chaffed, so I think this proves a point.

Can only assume it’s a result of weak paint or a contaminant within it and some form of galvanic action with the metal underneath.

My mates golf at 7 years old had rust on both front wheel arches and the boot.

Surprising how many cars by 5+ years old look fine in a walk round, with no sign of corrosion, but are absolutely brown  with rust underneath, both body and other parts. I've seen a Ford Ka like that.

Worth ordering up a couple of waxoil sprays and coating the vulnerable bits when they are new, or new to you, for what it costs.  Seems to have worked on a Panda we bought in 2005.

I blame the robots and the beancounters

A few painters I know have commented that the robots allow the manufacturers to spray paint extra thin to save money. Makes repairs hard because a human can't do it to match.

I hate robots

I hate rust. Stupid non-galvanised E30s.

(That's the sills and the floor pan...)

My old Polo was 13 (I think) when I sold it, and there wasn't a spot of rust on it. Yet my Golf was a 2002 with rust coming through. I guess it's just luck of the draw?

The 2002 golf has the drains behind the wheel arch liners at the front, which collect leaves and they rot.

This keeps the sills nice and wet and then they rot too.

If you clear them at the end of autumn, and ideally in spring too, you'll have no issues there.

Pre-FL Octy2 has the same issue.

Quite a few of them rotting away merrily at the sill level despite regularly clearing out that crud including mine.

The fl and current cars I have seen have the same drain holes.

It's not like it's hard to solve, it would be great if there was an easy flap to open so it could be done during a service.

The sills on my 15 year old Peugeot 306...

The Golf is 25 and sills are rock solid. Mind you I got rid of the sill trim and welded up the holes as soon as I bought it.

however my little brothers mk4 required VW to replace the tailgate under warranty and it would appear a common weakness on the model. Thankfully the mk1 Octavia seems a little less pourous!

when I realised mine were rusting I checked out some Mk1 Octys for comparison. The majority had no issues.

I've also seen plenty of old French cars that I would normally slate without mercy having no problems with rust around their sills or wings (plastic wings on Renaults will help there).

I think VW/Skoda dropped a ******* on the early Mk2s. Or possibly from a commercial point of view they got it dead on since the problem doesn't usually emerge until after 6yr.

Just removed all this from the N/S sill and wing
