Hi all

as a new owner just a few questions that I hope someone can help me with. I have a 1.9TDI with 81,000 miles up, I have heard that when changing cam belts it is advised to change the water pump too, is there anything to be gained (Other than a new water pump)  in doing this?

What is the optimum service interval for cam belt changes? Is it a relitively easy job? if not any idea what I should expect to be charged for a belt and tentioner change? plus w pump?

interval depends I think on engine code but my 03 ASZ  was done @40k and 5 years this time it's only 18K and six years with a lot of stop starts   both times the belt look good but both idles were changed too also this time the pumps new it was plastic but in good condition but for the cost/mither it's worth doing   kit and pump were approx. £120 labour I don't know

The reason for the water pump advice is that should the water pump break the work involved in fixing it is pretty much the same as the cam belt change. But putting in a new one at the same time as a cam belt service costs an extra £35 or so.

So most people pay £35 for the peace of mind of a new pump.

 

A jammed pump can also wreck the cam belt which is obviously not good for the rest of the engine.
