Just before my VRS went in for its service it started making a horrible screetching sound when first starting up which lasts for about 1 min before suddenly stopping and everything is fine. It only do's it when cold and a mechanic at the garage told me there is a pump which throws hot or warm air into the exhaust to warm up the cat and it may be the bearings in that which are going. Has anyone heard of this and if so what is the part needed to replace and how hard is it to do yourself. Car has 114000 miles on it but still runs as tight as a drum and go's well so don't want to get rid of it.

 

Any help would really be appreciated.

secondary air pump, there plenty of posts on this and a guide for repairing or taking it off altogether

Something else to check as I've just had this on my Vrs, Is if you leave the climatronic on all the time, is that the large cooling fan is not almost siezed as my one was. It shrieked away like a circular saw at start up as it runs when the aircon is on, and unless you are lucky with the securing screws, is a right pig to change out.
