Winter wheel rims for a Rapid/Spaceback

Featured Replies

Having just bought a Spaceback to replace an Octy 4x4, thoughts have turn to winter (already :o  :giggle:  ). So having done a bit of research I've bought these rims, as they match the OEM winter 6Jx15 ET38 size/fitting spec perfectly.

Normally these German manufactured Alutec rims are well over £300 for four, so seems a very good price at £220.

Did also look at these Ronals , as they make a lot of wheel rims for the VAG group (steel spare in the boot of our Spaceback has a Ronal manufactures sticker on it still) but decided the Alutec's were too price tempting.

Anyway just thought I'd highlight these for anyone else looking at wintering a Rapid/Spaceback.

Those prices look very good TP.

I quess partly because of the strength of the pound against the Euro.

Are you sourcing tyres from Oponeo as well?

I'm now having second thoughts on a set for the FL Yeti.. :dull:

Yes recently ordered the tyres to go with the rims and waiting in for delivery as we speak.

Openeo where bar far the best price currently for the 185/60 R15 size; went for Uniroyal MS Plus 77, as we use the previous MS Plus 66 design for our Monte, which seem to work particularly well in the more cold and wet conditions we get in winter.

Also appear to get strong reviews and for £42 a corner good value too. Had thought about getting 195/55 R15 the same as the Fabia, as this size is also approved for the Rapid but they were £58 a corner, so a no brainer to get the 185.

With no longer having 4x4 and an exposed Wold to cross to get to work, sticker winter tyres were a must.

Good value for alloys, but have you not forgotten the spare? Putting summer spare with winters in the snow will lead to interesting results...Just a thought, I always used a full set incl the spare, actually bought 1 tyre more (so 6 in total), then once 1 axle was 1/2 worn out, I replaced 1 worn tyre, put that wheel to work with the spare and put the other (part worn) wheel as spare.

Also, I used winter tyres for many years (12+ to be exact) and was very happy with performance improvement on snow/ice, but recently I moved towards using all weather tyres. My main argument against winter tyres is that the mileage on both my cars works out to under 5k miles in winter, and as a result the winter tyres last in excess of 8 years before they are fully replaced.  On balance, I prefer to drive on perhaps 5% less traction all-weather tyre, but at <4 years age rather than on old, dried out rubber with a rusty steel belt reinforcing it inside.

All weathers got significantly better noise and rolling resistance wise over the past 5 years, and in the UK, they're enough unless you live at a top of a steep mountain. They are also more than acceptable in the dry, so long as you buy from a reputable manufacturer (Vredestein, Goodyear, Bridgestone).

Looked at 4 season but as Skoda have fitted our Rapid with 215/40 R17 tyres, choice even for winters is limited. So I've gone the 2 sets of wheels route as we have done with the Monte with similar standard rims and tyres.
