Attaching new badges

Featured Replies

Bought new badges for my 04 Fabia vRS but when they turned up they aren't quite what I was expecting. They're not flat or solid so can't be glued, I liked the idea of the badges being chrome with my paintwork showing through the cutout sections but am now struggling with how to attach them to the car.

They've got lugs & I admit I haven't checked if my existing badges have the same & if the holes line up if they do but I don't think they do.

The outer circle of the new badges is 5 or 6mm deep but the lip around the bird(?) part is less than 1mm deep. I thought about filling them with foam sticky pads but aswell as ECP being completely useless when it comes to fulfilling my order I don't think the pads will hold up to the cutting process, also thought about filling the back of the badges with some kind of resin but have never done this before & seems fraught with pitfalls.

Can anyone suggest a way of attaching them that will hold & achieve the look I am after?

The lugs'll need to come off as the Fabia ones have 2 locating pins more centrally in the badge

Other than building up stick pads behind the metal bits you'll not really have any way of putting them in.

A couple of other options would be to:

to buy the new badge from a dealer

you can then separate chrome from black plastic

spray the black backing body colour

reassemble and fit

(pretty sure Tempra007 did the same on his Red Monte)

Alternatively I could print you a customer made one with whatever colour backing you wanted

I've got a couple of the badges in the first post and looked into getting another badge slightly smaller, spraying it black and sticking those badges on it, just like how the new Skoda badges now look.

Thanks PastyBoy, I've just bought these badges so don't really want to buy another set.

I thought about putting some kind of disc behind the chrome & spraying it red but didn't/don't know what material the paint would stick to, is the backing on the dealer badge just plastic?

assume so

Definitely not the correct lugs for the little Mk1 Fabia! If they are in the correct place then the badge will be far too small for the grille anyway...

I honestly don't think you're going to be able to easily and cheaply get these badges attached to the car without seeing something peeking through. As Pasty says, I'd just buy again and scrap the whole idea of seeing the paintwork behind - surely it's too much hassle for the effect you'd want? Each to their own though, and if you do find a way to make it work properly then let us all know :)

Thanks for the links but no-one seems to mention how they got them attached and they seem to start talking about Favorit badges that look like they have a plastic disc behind them.

It suddenly dawned on me yesterday that the underside doesn't need filling right up to the edge as no-one's going to see it, not on the front one at least, they just need enough surface area to be in contact with the bonnett so I started thinking about squashing them into plasticine & filling them epoxy putty or silicone or something but then thinking about what PastyBoy said if the original badges have got lugs on them then I'm going to have 2 holes (per badge) to fill so putting a disc inside the new badges might be the best approach.

Do the original badges come apart at all? Just thinking if I could separate the bit with the lugs & spray it or failing that attach it to whatever disc I insert I could reattach the badges the same way they came off.
