Which Wheel Cleaner

Featured Replies

Hi All

Cant find the half bottle of wheel cleaner Im sure was in the garage to buy some more, any recommendations please?

There is a ecp just accross the road from work so would be the most convenient, or a halfords close too.

ECP have the following at about £5

Wynns Fast Action Wheel Cleaner 1ltr

Normfest Rimol Alloy Wheel Cleaner 500ml

Carplan Wonder Wheels Trigger 500ml

Sonax Non-Acidic Wheel Cleaner 500ml

or for a few more £

Meguiars Hot Rims Wheel Cleaner 710ml

Spautopia PureX Wheel Cleaner and Sealer 500ml

or the bulk option...

TRIPLE QX Professional Wheel Cleaner 5Ltr

thanks

If you keep topping up the protection I put on (Sonax BSD)

You wont need these products

Just wash them regularly and reseal every 2 weeks

Hi Chris

I have bought some BSD and have reapplied when washing so far, but....

1.  I've made a decent start to my car care routine but when the evening light starts to fade I will only have one day per week that I can fit a wash in.  If im busy for whatever reason it might be two, three or four weeks between washes (heresy to the enthusiast crowd I know).  So if spending a few quid here will save me time or effort it may be worth it.

2.  My original wheels in the garage are soiled and need a good clean, especially inside.  Also I may have accidentaly offered to clean a relatives car, again whos wheels need a good clean.

With the above in mind would a dilutable cleaner like AB very cherry (non acid) be the way to go?  or just the same kit I already have with the addition of a ap clean and then fallout treatment?

Cheers

Simon

I use AB very cherry non acidic and really rate it.

Bilberry from Valet Pro for me

Sent from my Galaxy S5

+1 for Billberry I purchased 5 litres 2 years ago and only now need to purchase more. That's 3 cars washed more than regularly.

For the long term if your rims are in good condition and you want to do minimum maintenance but still keep them looking good then if you use a ceramic sealer like carbon collective platinum then you won't need any of the above as they come clean using either snowfoam of normal shampoo. As also advised I give them a light sprinklng of BSD and have a pet dryer now which is nearly as much fun as snowfoan And yes it was Chris who helped spend my money yet again LOL.

Sonax wheel cleaner is the best of those you listed. Otherwise the best cleaner by a country mile that doesnt also eat your wheels, is Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel.  Stay away from Wonder Wheels at all costs!

As Chris says, most important is to get a good wheel sealant afterwards and then you should only need the wheel cleaner a couple of times per year. No way you should EVER need 5L of wheel cleaner unless you decide to start cleaning cars professionally!

Cheers all

some good recomendations there having read a few reviews, I'm in no rush to order so I'll do some more reading and will add one of the above to my next order or pick some up from Autobrite next time I pass.

Yeah, Chris seems to have a talent for that :D  After washing my car 3 times in the last month (and last 4 or so years) I'll leave the purchase of the pet blaster for a little while.  Do need to pick up a shelf set or reclaim some space in the garage to keep the newly acquired detailing kit in good order.  Spend hasnt been too horific, so far I think i'm still under £150.  Seriosly though, how much for a bucket and grit guard? :S  someone is making some money!

Might well go down the sealant route, does still seems a little expert for my car cleaning experience.  Not conivinced I can get away with saying detaling till till I've used the two bucket method at least 10 times :notme: .

I think I was in a bit of a funny mood when I made the OP, I'm never going to use 5L in a million years.   Just struck me as odd that the 5L was so cheap, I assume it must be rubbish.  If there had been a chorus of replied extolling the virtues of the ECP own brand stuff I would have found room somewhere.

I know what you mean about the buckets and grit guards. I got my buckets - nice big yellow ones for about £3 each and the grit guards from amazon above, rather than pay some of the prices I've seen. The ceramic sealer is easy to apply, you just have to make sure you wipe any excess off before it starts to cure.

Me too.

Do you want some AB very cherry to try? I can send you some

Yep same here.

About the same for me group1rs - just diluted my last lot out of the 5L.

That's a very generous offer - you won't be disappoint with AB

That is a very generous offer, and if you were down the road I would gladly accept. I'd rather you weren't out of pocket, and by the time you have packed some up and posted it would probably cost you half as much as it would for me to buy the smallest bottle next time im passing the AB shop. Im only really 30mins away.

That said if you've got a load sitting there and dont mind flogging a bit I'd be game. Or looking on the AB site its £8 for 500ml or £25 for 5 litres, so if anyone local to me (mid cheshire) wants to split a batch?

I ended up paying the best part of £20 for a Megs bucket & gritguard for the rinse bucket, but picked up a standard £1.50 black bucket from ECP for the wash bucket. Figured that as long as I rinse well the debris should stay in the rinse bucket. Also I was in Wickes the other day and their buckets seemed like a good deal, no guards though.

Might have to be brave and give it a go with the orginal wheels. The wheels currently on the car could do with a refurb really before a proper seal would be worthwile.

I've got 5L so could send you up a couple of hundred ml to get you started. You dilute it to suit so would give you a decent amount. Postage is £3.20 first class I reckon!

TBH...There are so many cleaners, some aggressive, some mild

HOWEVER......

.........................If you have a decent sealant applied to your Alloys....Like CC Platinum Ceramic Wheel Sealant, you wont need any wheel cleaner at all, just soapy water

I'll second this and all I used on my alloys last time was fusso coat. And my weekly wash has now become just that for the alloys. The dirt and iron and general brake dust build up just falls off.

Fusso for wheels - good shout and very economical as you will have 99% of the pot left to either keep your wheels sealed for 50 years or the whole street of neighbours cars for 2/3 years.

Imagine would perform well on wheels

Very true mark, it has to be the best value wax Ive ever bought.

I'm trying to think of other places to use it to get some use out of it.

Depends a touch on how you frame economical? If I end up buying this for another purpose then great, if not then sure I count having 99% of anything the ive paid for sat on the shelf as economical. But I'm just splitting hairs, sorry, long and sh***y day. Point taken gladly on board that it goes a long way. :)

Would a sealent such as jetseal work similarly well to save putting another item in the basket?

Jetseal works well on wheels

Might have to test out the Fusso option on alloys.... Such a bargain product, with exceptional results. :)

Mine seem to be doing ok. I gave one of the alloys a wipe today and it came off with ease and still felt slippery underneath.

Soft99 waxes are a bargain!

Great! Thanks for the update Carl :)
